Hello and Happy Fall!

Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grade have been learning about and practicing 2 great ways to problem solve - the “wheel of choice” and the “time machine” (see pictures below).  They have also been learning strategies to help when they are having BIG feelings. Fourth grade has been learning about peaceful ways to solve conflict. Fifth grade has been learning how to be caring communicators. Lakeside students are such great problem solvers!!! 

During our October class time, we will also complete the fall SAEBRS screener (the Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk screener). This will help identify social emotional learning needs at a school, class, and individual level. 

Our friend Lightning is back again this year to help students learn about different career opportunities.  Lightning loves to learn about careers and would love to learn about your career. Lightning would be thrilled to visit your workplace. Parents/Caregivers have the opportunity to bring Lightning to their workplace and take a few photos of Lightning at work (be creative and have fun) . We hope that Lightning can visit lots of careers this year!!!

Student Council News
Student council is a student-led program which is open to 4th and 5th graders.  Students came home with the application form and information for their speech.  Student representatives are decided by their classroom.  Interested students are expected to show leadership skills within our school and when we hold community events.  Students will be expected to... 

With cold and flu season upon us already, your child may have a sore throat, runny nose, headache etc. and you may want your child to bring cough drops, Tylenol  or other medications to school.  All medications need to be brought into the office and given in the office.  Your child should not keep any medications in their backpacks.  All medications need a signed medication form in the office.  If you would like a form to fill out, please call or email the office to send one home with your child.  It only takes a minute to fill out! 

Please remind your child to cover their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and most importantly...WASH HANDS!!!  Washing hands can prevent the spread of diseases.

Your child should stay home if they have any of these symptoms: 100 degree temp or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, thick mucus from the nose, excessive drowsiness, undiagnosed rash or open sores, pain that interferes with learning such as; earache, red, itchy eyes with discharge, sore throat with difficulty swallowing or a persistent, productive cough.  This helps prevent the spread of illness to others in school.  If you child has any of these symptoms they should stay home and be free from symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.

FRIENDLY REMINDER: When calling your child's school to report their absence, please relay the symptoms they are having to the school office so that the District can continue to report to the health department accurately.

Pertussis cases continuing to increase state-wide
The number of Pertussis (Whooping cough) cases have been increasing locally in our county and region as well as statewide and nationally. In 2023, Winnebago County Public Health jurisdiction only had 1 case of pertussis compared to 21 cases so far in 2024, with the majority of those cases happening in recent months.

Transmission

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing, talking or other close contact.

Infected people can spread pertussis up to one week prior and three weeks after the cough begins if they are not treated with the appropriate antibiotics. Early treatment can reduce the severity of symptoms. Taking antibiotics early in the illness may shorten the amount of time someone is contagious so people may return to work or school.

High risk individuals include infants under 1 year old, pregnant women in their 3rd trimester, and the immunocompromised.

Signs and symptoms

Early symptoms are similar to a cold:

· runny nose

· sneezing

· low-grade fever

· slight cough

 
About one week into the illness:

· bursts of numerous, rapid coughs occurring more frequently at night

· followed by a deep breath that makes a "whoop" sound*

· vomiting and exhaustion often follow these episodes

· people may not appear ill between coughing episodes


*Infants 6 months old and younger may not have a strong enough deep breath for the characteristic “whoop”.

Prevention

Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect oneself and their loved ones against pertussis (whooping cough).

In addition, schools and daycare providers can support prevention through reminders about practicing good hygiene:

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Put your used tissue in the waste basket right away.
Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands, if you don’t have a tissue.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available.

Hearing and Vision Screenings
The hearing and vision screenings will be done on November 14th, 2024 this school year by UW Oshkosh Nursing students.  If you would like to OPT-OUT of these free screenings, please notify your school nurse by November 13th, 2024.
 

Music Update from Ms. Dorr

• K: Kindergarten students have been working on using their singing voices and keeping a steady beat on different instruments.
• 1-2: 1st and 2nd grade students have been practicing writing rhythms and created their own rhythms using fall foods!
• 3-5: 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students learned how to sing in a round! Ask your student to sing "To Stop the Train" for you at home!
