Black Wolf Bulletin
May 2, 2025; Issue 17
Dear Lakeside Families,
Thank you to all the families who joined us for our Family Night! It was a wonderful evening filled with joy, learning, and celebration of all the incredible literacy work our students have accomplished this year. We loved seeing the pride on our students’ faces as they shared their projects, writing, and reading growth with you. It was a meaningful opportunity to showcase their hard work and give you a glimpse into the daily literacy experiences that help them grow as readers and writers. Your support and involvement make all the difference—thank you for being such an important part of our school community!
As we head into the final weeks of the school year, we encourage all families to help us finish strong by reinforcing the importance of being responsible, respectful, and safe, both in and out of the classroom. These expectations guide everything we do at school and help create a positive, focused learning environment. Please talk with your child about showing responsibility by completing homework on time, coming to school prepared, and taking care of their belongings. Discuss how being respectful means using kind words, listening to adults and classmates, and including others. And remind them that being safe includes following school rules, keeping their hands and feet to themselves, and making good choices during play. Together, we can help every student end the year on a high note!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Staff Appreciation Week - May 5th - 9th!What an extra special week to celebrate each and every one of Lakeside’s wonderful staff members! Class Placement Request for 2025-2026
Class lists are created with the belief that student needs are best met through heterogeneous/mixed groups that take into consideration such variables as student numbers, gender ratios, student behaviors, and achievement levels. The services of our special education teachers and other academic specialists also impact a student’s placement. As a result, requests for classroom placements are usually not necessary.
The talents of our teachers at Lakeside are diverse. Matching teaching and learning styles requires appropriate knowledge of both the learner and the teacher. In addition, OASD Board Policy 5120 charges us with the important task of creating balanced classes. It also includes this statement in the policy: “Parent/guardian request for assignment of students to specific teachers prior to receiving notice of placement will be carefully limited to assure an equal opportunity for all students.”
If parents still would like to submit a request, they must base the request upon a legitimate need of the student. If a parent has an educational reason to support a classroom placement, the following guidelines should be followed:
- Please submit a Request for Specific Teacher or Class Prior to Assignment form, stating the reasons why such a placement is important for your child's education. Forms are available in the office or you can fill out electronically here.
- All requests should be received in the office no later than Friday, May 16th. No requests received after this date will be honored.
Due to the need to balance classes, distribute learning abilities, place students together in workable groups, and numerous other variables that must be considered, we are unable to guarantee that requests will be honored. Thank you for your understanding as we move forward to create great learning environments for ALL students!

We Need Your Help!
It's that time of year when the playground gets extra wet and muddy at time, and spills can happen any time of year. Every day we have students coming to the health office in need of a change of clothes, and we could use your help! How?
- Send your child (even the big ones!) to school with an extra change of clothes, if you are able. They can live in their backpack, or stay in their locker until needed. We're always the most comfortable in our own clothes, so this is a great option!
- If your child does need to borrow clothes from the office for a day, please wash and return the items as quickly as possible so that they can be available for another student in need.
- Do you have extra pants or shirts that your children have outgrown and can donate to the office? Please send them in! We could use shirts and pants in sizes 5 through 14/16!
If your child has a fall or spill resulting in wet clothes at school and we don't have something they can fit in, we may need to call you to bring some to school to get them through the end of the day. Thanks for your help - we appreciate it!
Attendance Office Information
If you need to call your student(s) in for the day, please call the main office at 920-424-0131. If you need to leave a voicemail, please state your student(s) full name, grade, reason for absence and also any symptoms your student may be experiencing. You can also email the school secretary at: kylene.schrage@oshkosh.k12.wi.us for any absences. If you need to pick up your student early for an any reason, please notify the main office ahead of time, so we can make sure to have your student ready for you. As always, please feel free to reach out to the main office with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your help.
A cup of coffee or an energy drink in the morning/ afternoon for a pick me up is typically warranted for adults - life is busy, schedules overfill, and time does not slow down for anyone! BUT is it healthy for kids?
Energy drinks like Alani, Ghost, Celsius, etc. have beautiful, eye-catching artwork and bright colors to draw attention and help sell their products. They also utilize alluring wording, stating that they can help ‘enhance physical and mental performance’ which leads students to believe that they are essential for achieving success in their academic life.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), caffeine-related visits to US emergency departments have nearly doubled among middle/ high school students from 2017 to 2023. In 2023 alone, poison control centers have recorded a 24% rise in calls regarding young people reacting negatively to energy drinks.
The effects of consuming caffeine in children present as: increased heart rate, anxiety, disrupted sleep (caffeine can stay in the body for 8 hours depending on the individual’s metabolism), nausea, restlessness, or diarrhea. When wearing off, it may cause the child to have a headache or feel irritable/ tired.
At this time, there is no ‘recommended dose’ of caffeine in children - pediatricians generally advise against caffeine in children under 12 years of age and a maximum of 100mg daily in those aged 12-18. (The AAP states the best practice is to avoid caffeine) Parents can make alternative healthy choices with their children!
Healthy Alternatives:
- Prioritizing water intake - make a water chart to see how much water is being consumed, have a family competition in how many ounces of water have been ingested by each family member, buying a water bottle the child wants to use!
- Monitoring the nutrition labels of drinks children are wanting to consume
- Promoting good sleep habits - avoid screen time or heavy physical activity close to bedtime, try to go to sleep around the same time each night, utilize calming essential oils like lavender, create a quiet/ dark environment, and ensuring that children are getting the recommended amount of sleep (typically 9-12 hours).
Chaperone & Volunteering Reminders
Field trip season is coming up fast and if you are interested in chaperoning a field trip or volunteering by helping in your child's classroom, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. If you DID NOT fill out a volunteer application last year (23-24) please click HERE to begin the application process. All verified backgrounds checks are good for three years, and are effective for all OASD schools. If you have any questions about this process, please contact our school office at 920.424.0131 or kylene.schrage@oshkosh.k12.wi.us
Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 3-4 business days, so please plan accordingly!
Health Office Update
It's tick season!
I know, it’s not something to be excited about, but we can learn about ticks to make tick season more tolerable. The beautiful playground and woods surrounding our school are the exact type of area that ticks love to live in. So, what can our students do to prevent ticks from attaching to their skin?
Students should watch for ticks on their clothes when entering the building in the morning and after any recess. If the tick is crawling on their skin or clothes they should remove the tick immediately and notify a teacher or recess supervisor. If a student finds a tick that is already attached to their skin they should come to the health office as soon as they notify their teacher. While we are unable to remove the attached tick at school, we will call and notify parents what we have found. Parents can then come to school and remove the tick or take the child home to remove the tick. Please remember that if you do remove an attached tick at home it is best to keep the tick in a clear baggie in case you later need to identify the type of tick.
The CDC has great information on tick removal, bite prevention and when to contact a doctor after a tick bite. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us in the health office at kristin.mike@oshkosh.k12.
End of the Year Update from the Health Office
All medications are to be picked up by the parent/guardian on or before the last day of
school. Kristin Mike, LPN, will be reaching out regarding parental consent to send home
over the counter medications (ie. cough drops) home with your student(s). Our policy
will not allow us to keep them for the next school year. If there is NO response regarding
the medication and they are not picked up/ sent home by the end of the day on the last
day of school, June 5th, the medication will be properly disposed of.
If your child has a current health plan or emergency plan on file with the school, you will
receive a copy during the summer to update for the upcoming school year.
If your child has a change in their health or has a healthcare need at school, please
email our school district nurse, Mikaila Peterson during the summer and she will contact
you at the beginning of the school year to discuss. Email: mikaila.peterson@
If your child will need to take medication at school, please work with your doctor to have
the following form completed and signed before the start of the school year. As a
reminder, the directions on the medication bottle must match the written order on the
medication request form.
*Medication Treatment/Request Form
If you have a child with a severe allergy, asthma, or seizures the following forms will
need to be completed for our school nurse. Inhalers, Epi-Pens, Allergy medications, etc.,
