Dear Lakeside Families,

This week was Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. Lakeside is so fortunate to have an amazing group of educators and support staff that value strong relationships and personal growth for every learner. If you have not yet reached out to thank your child's teachers, please send a note or an email to share your appreciation!

Our last PTO meeting of the year was Monday. A huge thank you goes to our PTO officers for coordinating events and fundraising to support the students and staff here at Lakeside! Last week, our PTO was instrumental in celebrating Staff Appreciation. Thank you to all families who donated items for Staff Appreciation. A special thanks goes out to Kari Zabel and Terri Oesterreich for setting up for each day's theme! The Lakeside staff felt the love this week!

As we get closer to the end of the school year, we will have a few events coming up for families:

Kindergarten students will celebrate "moving on" on Tuesday, May 30 at 1:15 pm! All guests will need to enter the building through Door #1 and check in at the office (with a drivers license). We recommend arriving at least 15-20 minutes prior to this event if you have never checked in to our Raptor system.
Fifth grade promotion and DARE graduation will take place on Friday, June 2 at 9:00 am. All guests will need to enter the building through Door #1 and check in at the office (with a drivers license). We recommend arriving at least 15-20 minutes prior to this event if you have never checked in to our Raptor system.
Field Day events are scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, June 2. Please be on the lookout for a sign up genius to volunteer for this afternoon of fun!

Specialist Updates

Art Update - Ms. Keefe

Art Update from Ms. Keefe:

In art at Lakeside, we are learning about new art terms and how they work with and relate to different mediums!

Kindergarten and first grade classes are just starting a project called Color Theory Birds. In this unit, we will learn all about the primary and secondary colors and different types of brushstrokes to make our birds!

Second and third grade classes are making monochromatic paper sculptures. These will be on a larger scale and we will experiment with tempera cakes, colored pencils and manipulating cut paper!

Fourth and fifth grade classes are finally finishing and will soon be taking home their stuffed paper sculptures, which we are very proud of! After finishing up on these, we are now moving onto working with clay, making our own personalized Chia Pets!

Art Update - Ms. Wollangk

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

5th Grade - It is our graphic design unit, we are learning about the career as well as fonts.

4th Grade - 4th is finishing in a monstrously great way, with CLAY!

3rd Grade - Moving into our last project, 3rd is working like artist Paul Klee using watercolor grids in an abstract way.

2nd Grade - BAM, 2nd is finishing up their onomatopoeias and learning about comic book design as a career. SHAZAM!

1st Grade - Our Monet water lilies are on display and we have moved into learning about shoe design as a career choice.

Kindergarten - We are loving playing with tempera as we create our abstract flowers.

This has been an exciting year of creativity, I can’t believe how fast it has flown. May you all have a safe and fun summer, we’ll see you in the art room next fall!

Music Update - Ms. Flood

Music Update from Ms. Flood:

Dear Lakeside Families,

The Spring Concert is quickly approaching! The concert will be held on Monday, May 15th at 6:00 pm in the Alberta Kimball Auditorium of Oshkosh West High School. Every student has a special role in this concert, so it is important that your student is there. If you know that your child will not be able to attend, please
let me know by email (megan.flood@oshkosh.k12.wi.us) so we can plan ahead. The students have been working very hard over the last few weeks preparing for this concert and I think you will love what you hear!

Students need to be dropped off with their classroom teacher, in the auditorium, at 5:45. Please dress to impress and wear your best! Students must wear school-appropriate clothing. Grades 1-5 will sit with their teachers in the back of the auditorium for the entire performance (there will be places marked off for
each grade level). Follow the signs telling you and your students where to go.

Kindergarten families: When you arrive at the spring concert, kindergarten students should find their teacher, Mrs. Festge or Mrs. Koeppl. They will be in the hallway outside the auditorium, lining up the students. After you have dropped them off, find your seats and save one for your student! They will be the first to perform. When they're finished, you will go to the stage and pick them up, so they can enjoy the rest of the concert with you. Please have your child use the restroom before sending them to sit with their classroom, as there will be no bathroom breaks during the concert.

You, as a parent, are very important in your child’s education and they look to you as an example. Please review these expectations with your child and with other guests who are joining you:

Please turn off all cell phones. Not only are they distracting to performers, they can also interfere with the auditorium’s microphone system. (If it is not possible to turn them off completely, please silence the device.)
No one or no items should be in the aisles during the concert. It is a fire hazard and the classes will be walking up and down the aisles to get to the stage.
Please refrain from whistling, making loud noises, or shouting out to any performer.
Please do not leave during a performance. If it is necessary to leave the auditorium, please make an exit between grade levels.

Phy-Ed Update - Mrs. Homman

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman:

Hello Lakeside Families!

This school year has brought many movement opportunities for students. We have practiced throwing and catching like a football player, tumbling skills, bowling etiquette, soccer skills, maneuvering through obstacle courses, roller skating, and so much more. Our final lessons this month will include baseball skills, Frisbee throwing, and yard games.

The Oshkosh Rec Department will be hosting a track meet for students ages 7-12 on Friday, June 16th at the Oshkosh North High School Track starting at 9:00AM. Events include sprints, distance running, softball throw and standing long jump. Participants will compete in age groups according to their age as of June 16, 2023. Information for Field Day will be shared soon! We will be looking for volunteers to help with our stations the afternoon of Friday, June 2nd. Watch for a SignUp Genius in the upcoming weeks.

This month there were no digital citizenship lessons as we work to get the library ready for the summer! However, I did want to end the year by sharing that during the school year one of the big lessons students learned was that technology is best in moderation and that we all need to find balance. School Counselor Update - Mrs. Lubinski

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski:

There are so many wonderful things always happening at Lakeside! This year is flying by!! I can’t believe we will be wrapping up this school year shortly!!

Kindergarten, third, fourth, and fifth graders have been learning great communication skills. Kindergarten and third grade focused on using these skills in healthy conflict resolution and in building friendships. Fourth and fifth grade have been learning about different communication styles. First and second graders have been learning about resiliency. All grades will end our counseling class time together this year with fun activities involving cooperation, teamwork, and celebration of our amazing class families. Fifth grade will also be taking a tour of South Park Middle School. We will miss the fifth grade class like crazy next year but they are going to do incredible things in middle school!

KID TIP - Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children. Check out this link (100 Fun Summer Activities for Kids) for fun ideas to do as a family.

Technology Update - Mrs. Stephany

Technology Update from Mrs. Stephany

As we wrap up the school year, students can access their classroom content over the summer from the OASD Portal at: https://launchpad.classlink.com/oshkosh. Students can log in using the username and password. Student usernames are the first 5 letters of the last name followed by the first initial of the first name. Then they include the last 4 digits of the student ID number. For example, for “Sample Student” the username would be “studes5678.” The student would have to either remember the password or record it from school in a safe spot to share with you. Students in grades K-2 have QR codes that they use at school. Outside the district, their password would have a 0 followed by their student ID number.

Fifth graders will turn in their Chromebooks at the end of the school year for the incoming third grade class to use. Incoming sixth grade students receive a different chromebook at their middle school with a case to transport it.

New Garden Beds Installed!

If you've been to Lakeside recently, you may have noticed that we have some new garden beds installed! Our old garden beds were falling apart, so one of our WONDERFUL volunteers, Nancy Benkoske, spearheaded the effort to raise funds for new beds, soil and seeds. She and her husband, Mark, then removed the old beds and built six beautiful new ones from cedar. More soil will be added soon, and plants are scheduled to arrive later in May. We are so grateful to Nancy and Mark Benkoske for their hard work on this project, and we know we will be enjoying the new beds for years to come - thank you, both!

We would also like to extend a thank you to the following individuals and organizations for their role in supporting our garden beds:

Oshkosh Area School District for providing financing for five of the new beds
Noffke Lumber, who generously provided the lumber for the sixth bed
Wild Ones of the Fox Valley, who awarded grant money to purchase the prairie and pollinator plants that will fill the beds
- As part of the national Wild Ones organization, Wild Ones of the Fox Valley was established in 1994 and promotes natural landscaping using native plants.
Tom Verstegen, who provided additional mulch for the garden beds
Lakeside families that provided monetary donations during our Family Night, which will be used for plants

End of the Year Update from the Health Office

If your child has a current health plan or emergency plan on file with school, you will receive a copy during the summer to update for the upcoming school year.

If your child has a change in their health or has a healthcare need at school, please contact our school district nurse, Mikaila Peterson, via email during the summer and she will contact you at the beginning of the school year to discuss. Email: mikaila.peterson@oshkosh.k12.wi.us

If your child will need to take medication at school, please work with your doctor to have the following form completed and signed before the start of the school year. As a reminder, the directions on the medication bottle must match the written order on the medication request form.

If you have a child with a severe allergy and/or asthma, or seizures the following forms will need to be completed for our school nurse. Inhalers, Epi-Pens, Allergy medications, etc., must be in their original containers. Expiration dates will be monitored.

Yearbooks Available

Yearbooks have been delivered to school! Teachers have received the copies for students who pre-ordered yearbooks; if you haven't seen your child's yet, know that many teachers hold them for the last week of school for signing. If your family forgot to order a yearbook but you still want one, you're in luck! We have a few available in the office for purchase on a first come, first served basis. They are $14.00 each, and please note that we are unable to make change. Make checks payable to Lakeside Elementary, or send exact change with your child.

Event RemindersAre you coming to school for an event during the school day? If you know you will be attending an event at school and you've already been scanned using our "Raptor" security system (this year or any prior year), call the office or send me an email ahead of time. I'll have your visitor badge printed and ready to go, and you can skip the line!

Not "Raptored" yet? Please remember to bring your photo ID the first time you come to school for an event during the day. After that first time, we can look you up by name.

Volunteering Reminders What Volunteer Opportunities are Available? - Ask a Librarian Delaware

As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. These applications are to be filled out each school year, but then are good for the remainder of the year, and are effective for all OASD schools. You can find the application HERE.

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 48 hours, so please plan accordingly!
