Dear Lakeside Families,

It was so wonderful to see so many kids and families at our school dance two weeks ago! Students had a blast showing off their dances! Thank you, families, for participating in the basket raffles and silent auctions. This fundraiser raised about $2,900 for PTO to use to support our school community and reduce busing costs for field trips for the end of the year! A huge shout out to Andrea Schneider, Stephanie Homman, and ElizaBeth Chase, for organizing this event! Thanks to all other parents and staff that contributed with help setting up, preparing baskets, take-down, etc.!

Lakeside has a few other exciting upcoming events, including that our new playground equipment will be installed in mid April. We are hoping that all families will be able to attend Family Engagement Night on Thursday, April 27. You will be able to see the playground equipment at this event! More information about Family Engagement Night will be sent out after spring break.

We are currently looking for a couple parent representatives to join our playground team. We have one more phase of the playground that we will be fundraising for (specifically seeking someone with connections to local businesses). If you have any interest, or would like more information, please email me.

When we return from spring break, our third through fifth grade students will be beginning to prepare for the Wisconsin Forward Exam. Testing dates and times are listed below. It is important that your child is at school and on time so they can have a healthy snack and be ready for testing with their class.

Specialist Updates

Art Update - Keefe

Art Update from Ms. Keefe:

In art at Lakeside, we are learning about new historical artists and furthering our understanding of different art materials!

In kindergarten and first grade, we are learning about an artist named Grandma Moses and her folk-art style. We are also experimenting with mixed media by making landscape art using watercolor and permanent marker. We will soon be moving on to learning about bumble bees and their importance in our environment and creating our own bumble bees with tempera paint.

In second and third grade, we are learning about Frida Kahlo and her love of animals, and we are making animal prints through printmaking. We will soon be moving on to learning about watercolor and oil pastel when we create our garden landscapes to hopefully bring spring upon us soon!

In fourth and fifth grade, we just finished learning about the Renaissance and finished our watercolor still lifes. Many of them even appeared in an art show! Now we are moving on to stuffed paper sculptures, where students get to experiment with mixing mediums with paper, paint, and stuffing!

Art Update - Wollangk

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

5th Grade - 5th is just wrapping up their clay forms and will be focused on glazing before our spring break.

4th Grade - Fossils are in the hallway and we are moving on to seascapes, learning about middleground, background and foreground.

3rd Grade - Our next unit is our fibers unit and will be learning three basic stitches in sewing.

2nd Grade - The cupcakes look good enough to eat and we are moving into our clay unit with decorative tiles.

1st Grade - Our first graders are onto clay with a rainbow of colors.

Kindergarten - Robots are just about to finish, we used an abundance of rectangles and circles to create our project. Next up we focus on diamonds as we go fly kites on a colorful watercolor background.

Music Update

Music Update from Ms. Flood:

Hello, Lakeside families! I am happy to announce that we will be having a spring concert this year! All grades will be involved. The concert will be held on Monday, May 15th at 6:00 pm in the Alberta Kimball Auditorium of Oshkosh West High School. Every student has a special role in this concert, so it is important that your student is there. If you know that your student will not be able to attend, please let me know by email (megan.flood@oshkosh.k12.wi.us) so we can plan ahead. Students will begin learning their music in the upcoming weeks and are so excited to share what they have been working on in class!

Please mark this date on your calendars! We will be sending out more information closer to the concert date.

Phy-Ed Update

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman:

Hello Lakeside Families!

Students in grades K-5 had the opportunity to practice gymnastic and tumbling skills over the past two weeks. Balance beams, climbing ropes, rolling stations, partner stunts, and an obstacle course were some of the favorites from the unit.

We are diving into our nutrition unit now. Students are learning about MyPlate and the 5 food groups, the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, and how food gives us energy. There are so many great conversations happening during these lessons. Students are curious about where their food comes from and why it is important to fuel our bodies with healthy foods. A few big take-aways from the lessons were: 1.) make half your plate fruits and vegetables 2.) eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

Roller skating starts on Tuesday, March 28th! Students are welcome to bring their own helmet and safety gear to school, but it’s not required as we have these items available. Lakeside will provide roller skates for every student, so you can leave your skates and blades at home.

Media Specialist Update

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month we are continuing our discussion of Digital Citizenship by talking about Cyberbullying and Online Drama. In Kindergarten and Fifth Grade we read the book Troll Stinks by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross. In Kindergarten we explored the feelings of the characters and talked about how our words can have a big impact on others feelings. In fifth grade after reading the book we talked about cyberbullying and why it is important to stand against it when we see it and then made pennants with encouraging words for those who have experienced cyberbullying. In first grade we talked about what cyberbullying is and then talked about ways we can respond to it and ways we can be an upstander against it. In second grade we learned the acronym STOP (Step away, Tell a trusted adult, Ok sites first, and Pause and think online) and how we can use this to respond to cyberbullying. In third grade we talked about how our words have power and that we need to use those words wisely because we don’t know what the other person is going through on the other side of the screen. In fourth grade we made superheroes to stand up against cyberbullying. These superheroes had a variety of powers to stand up against cyberbullies and had a variety of costumes and sidekicks!

School Counselor Update

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski:

Kindergarten, first, and second grade students are learning about what a career is and about many different community helpers and career possibilities. Lakeside students will also have a wonderful educational opportunity to learn from community members during Interest Hour on March 17th. Third grade and fifth grade students are learning about friendship, letting go of grudges, and forgiveness. They will also be learning strategies to use when they are feeling anxious or worried (Ask your 3rd or 5th grader to share their favorite one with you 😊) Fourth grade is learning about perspective taking and responding to disappointment with a growth mindset.

Technology Update

Technology Update from Mrs. Stephany

Our 3-5 grade students will be taking the WI Forward exam soon. Teachers will be walking students through the online environment and reviewing sample questions. Good teaching is our best preparation for students, but having children comfortable with the format will help reduce any anxiety associated with a test. If you are interested in reviewing any test tools with students at home or checking out what the test looks like, you may visit https://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items and click on Online Test Tools (OTT). Students can practice highlighting, scrolling, cross out, post it, and any math tools. Remember, this is just to practice the tools; the sample tests may not be at your child’s level. Content on the actual test will reflect their current grade level. More information for families is available at: https://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/parent-info about assessments.

Update from Ms. Olsen

Please see the message below from Ms. Delaney Olsen:

As many of you know, I've been on long-term leave from the district since the spring of 2022 due to my health. We're now coming up on a year since the event, and my doctor has still not deemed me medically fit to return to teaching. Therefore, I've made the difficult decision to resign from my position at Lakeside and Washington. As devastated as I am, I know this is the best decision for my health and for the students moving forward. - Ms. Olsen

We are so grateful to Ms. Olsen for her work with our students at Lakeside, and we wish her well.

We Need Your Help!It's that time of year when the playground gets extra wet and muddy at time, and spills can happen any time of year. Every day we have students coming to the health office in need of a change of clothes, and we could use your help! How?

Send your child (even the big ones!) to school with an extra change of clothes, if you are able. They can live in their backpack, or stay in their locker until needed. We're always the most comfortable in our own clothes, so this is a great option!
If your child does need to borrow clothes from the office for a day, please wash and return the items as quickly as possible so that they can be available for another student in need.
Do you have extra pants or shirts that your children have outgrown and can donate to the office? Please send them in! We could use shirts and pants in sizes 5 through 14/16!

If your child has a fall or spill resulting in wet clothes at school and we don't have something they can fit in, we may need to call you to bring some to school to get them through the end of the day. Thanks for your help - we appreciate it!

OASD eAcademy 2023-24 Enrollment Period

The Oshkosh Area School District is pleased to announce the 2023-24 enrollment period for the District’s eAcademy, a fully online program for grades K-12. The enrollment period will take place from March 8 through March 28, 2023, at 3 p.m., which will allow students to enroll in eAcademy for the full 2023-24 school year. Event RemindersAre you coming to school for an event during the school day? If you know you will be attending an event at school and you've already been scanned using our "Raptor" security system (this year or any prior year), call the office or send me an email ahead of time. I'll have your visitor badge printed and ready to go, and you can skip the line!

Not "Raptored" yet? Please remember to bring your photo ID the first time you come to school for an event during the day. After that first time, we can look you up by name.

Volunteering Reminders What Volunteer Opportunities are Available? - Ask a Librarian Delaware

As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. These applications are to be filled out each school year, but then are good for the remainder of the year, and are effective for all OASD schools. You can find the application HERE.

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 48 hours, so please plan accordingly!
