Dear Lakeside Families,

We are looking forward to seeing many kids and families at our school dance tonight! A huge shout out to our PTO for organizing this event and to Mrs. Homman, our PE teacher for preparing dances for our students! Please plan to stay near your child at tonight's event; it's a busy one! We reviewed expectations at school with children for tonight's event, including to walk or dance in the gym (no running), and to stay in the building (unless supervised outside by a parent). Exterior doors will remain closed/locked. Only Door #11 will be open for entrance to the dance.

When we return from spring break, our third through fifth grade students will be preparing for and taking the Wisconsin Forward Exam. Testing dates and times are listed below. It is important that your child is at school and on time so they can have a healthy snack and be ready for testing with their class.

I hope your family has a wonderful spring break! Fourth quarter will begin when we return!

Art Update - Ryan

Art Update from Mrs. Ryan:

Happy Spring Lakeside! Hope you are having a wonderful March. The next couple weeks we
will be busy learning about weather and animals and Contemporary/ Pop Art artists and
reviewing the color wheel in unique ways.

Congratulations to Evelyn Zabel, her Penguin Mixed Media artwork was selected to represent Lakeside for the Oshkosh Gallery Walk, Youth Art Month exhibit at the ArtSpace Collective Gallery. Artwork can be viewed thru the month of March during regular gallery hours.

Art Update - Wollangk

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

5th Grade - It’s the year of the Dragon and students are learning about the Chinese zodiac as they create their own dragon lantern.

4th Grade - 4th Graders are learning how to emboss metal as they design their own insect.

3rd Grade - We are using what we know about color blocking and applying it to architecture, inspired by artist Ton Schulten.

2nd Grade - Our clay unit is almost finished and our butterfly tiles are looking great!

1st Grade - Our color pencil unit has us learning about pressure and how it changes the look of our medium.

Kindergarten - "L” is for Lizard. Kindergarten is creating a colorful chameleon and learning rainbow order.

Music Update

Music Update from Ms. Dorr:

Hello, Lakeside families! I am happy to announce that we will be having a spring concert this year! All grades will be involved. The concert will be held on Tuesday, April 30th at 6:00 pm in the Alberta Kimball Auditorium of Oshkosh West High School. Every student has a special role in this concert, so it is important that your student is there. If you know that your student will not be able to attend, please let me know by email (emily.dorr@oshkosh.k12.wi.us) so we can plan ahead. Students will begin learning their music in the upcoming weeks and are so excited to share what they have been working on in class!

Please mark this date on your calendars! We will be sending out more information closer to the concert date.

I look forward to seeing all of our Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Lakeside families at this fun event!

Phy-Ed Update

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman:

Hello Lakeside Families!

Students in grades K-5 had the opportunity to practice gymnastic and tumbling skills over the past two weeks. Balance beams, climbing ropes, rolling stations, partner stunts, and an obstacle course were some of the favorites from the unit.

We are currently in the nutrition unit. Students are learning about MyPlate and the 5 food groups, the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, and how food gives us energy. There are so many great conversations happening during these lessons. Students are curious about where their food comes from and why it is important to fuel our bodies with healthy foods. A few big take-aways from the lessons were: 1.) make half your plate fruits and vegetables 2.) eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

Our upcoming roller skating unit begins after Spring Break. We will provide skates, protective wrist/knee pads, and helmets during this unit. Students may also bring a helmet from home. Students will be required to wear helmets so please be mindful of hairstyles. A bonnet, head wrap, or scarf to protect a hairstyle is welcome.

Media Specialist Update

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month for our digital citizenship lessons classes worked on earning their final sticker towards their digital citizenship celebrations! Kindergarten and first grade students worked on talking about media balance. In kindergarten, we read the book If you Give a Mouse an iPhone by Ann Droyd. After reading the book, we talked about all of the things that Mouse did that were unsafe or that he missed by not putting down the phone for a little while. In first grade, we read the book Doug Unplugged by Dan Yaccarino. While reading the book we talked about how technology can teach us a lot of things but it can’t teach us everything and that we can learn a lot by putting our technology down and enjoying life off of technology. Second through fifth grade classes talked about media literacy and how we need to be careful with what we read and see online. In these lessons we talked about how we can’t believe everything we see online and that when we are seeing something online it is important to ask ourselves questions about who the author is and why they are writing or posting something. We also talked about how to give credit to the sources that we are using.

School Counselor Update

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski:

Happy March!

Kindergarten students are practicing identifying their feelings and how to help return to calm when big feelings show up. First and second grade students are learning about what a career is and about many different community helpers and career possibilities. Third grade and fifth grade students are learning about friendship, letting go of grudges, and forgiveness. They will also be learning strategies to use when they are feeling anxious or worried (Ask your 3rd or 5th grader to share their favorite one with you 😊) Fourth grade is learning about perspective taking and responding to disappointment with a growth mindset.

This year a new friend has joined the counseling program. His name is Lightning and he is Thunder’s (our mascot) best friend. Lightning loves to learn about careers and would love to learn about your career. Lightning would be thrilled to visit your workplace. Parents/Caregivers have the opportunity to bring Lightning to their workplace and take a few photos of Lightning at work (be creative and have fun) . We hope that Lightning can visit lots of careers this year!!!

Clothes Needed!

It's that time of year when the playground gets extra wet and muddy at time, and spills can happen any time of year. Every day we have students coming to the health office in need of a change of clothes, and we could use your help! How?

Do you have extra pants or shirts that your children have outgrown and can donate to the office? Please send them in! We could use shirts and pants in sizes 5 through 14/16!
Send your child (even the big ones!) to school with an extra change of clothes, if you are able. They can live in their backpack, or stay in their locker until needed. We're always the most comfortable in our own clothes, so this is a great option!
If your child does need to borrow clothes from the office for a day, please wash and return the items as quickly as possible so that they can be available for another student in need.

If your child has a fall or spill resulting in wet clothes at school and we don't have something they can fit in, we may need to call you to bring some to school to get them through the end of the day. Thanks for your help - we appreciate it!

Get ready for Oshkosh Summer School 2024

Registration Opens March 6, Course Guide Now Available

Starting March 6, families may begin registering their child(ren) for Summer School 2024! Be sure to sign up early because classes do fill up and those that do not have enough students enrolled may be canceled.

OASD Summer School offers a variety of in-person and virtual classes for students entering kindergarten through high school, including athletic camps, music camps, and eAcademy options. While remedial courses are available, the majority of courses are designed to keep students thinking and exploring during the summer.

COURSE GUIDE: Detailed information about all course options, including special camps and registration instructions, are available on the OASD Summer School webpage in the Summer School Course Guide.

Summer School enrollment is FREE and available for all OASD students, students who live within the district boundaries, and students who are open-enrolled in the OASD.

Attendance Office Information

If you need to call your student(s) in for the day, please call the main office at 920-424-0131. If you need to leave a voicemail, please state your student(s) full name, grade, reason for absence and also any symptoms your student may be experiencing. You can also email the school secretary at: kylene.Schrage@oshkosh.k12.wi.us for any absences. If you need to pick up your student early for an any reason, please notify the main office ahead of time, so we can make sure to have your student ready for you. As always, please feel free to reach out to the main office with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your help.

Volunteering Reminders What Volunteer Opportunities are Available? - Ask a Librarian Delaware

As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. These applications are to be filled out each school year, but then are good for the remainder of the year, and are effective for all OASD schools. You can find the application HERE.

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 3-4 business days, so please plan accordingly!
