Dear Lakeside Families,

I hope you and your family are doing well! Semester 1 is now complete and report cards are on their way to your homes. Please take some time to review your child's report card with your child. Here are some questions that may help guide your conversation at home:

How do you think your year has been going so far?
What are you proud of?
What do you think your greatest strength as a learner is? Why do you think so?
What do you think is the most challenging part of your school day? Why?
Is there anything you want to change or improve in second semester? How do you think you'll do it?

There are two ways of thinking about problems, using a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. In a fixed mindset, the belief is that this is the way that things are and there is not much that you can do about it. In a growth mindset, the belief is that setbacks or challenges are learning opportunities and you can grow from them. Talk to your child about having a growth mindset and give an example where you used a growth mindset when faced with a challenge.

Make sure to celebrate your child's efforts! We are proud of all of our Lakeside learners! Each day, learners are growing in their social/emotional and academic learning! We look forward to another semester of learning and growing together.

Art Update

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

Finalizing the first semester:

5th Grade - Dragon eyes are almost ready to hang in the hallways.

4th Grade - Finished their folk art projects and are moving into semester 2 with winter cardinals.

3rd Grade - Printmaking, snowman portraits have begun. New printing techniques and cute profiles on their way.

2nd Grade - Our hibernating bears are on display and our next project started: oil pastel landscapes.

1st Grade - Our warmly dressed reindeer are finished and we are moving on to our next medium… tempera paint.

Kindergarten - “P” is for penguin, there are cutely drawn and tempera painted penguins being developed in the art room.

Welcome to Ms. Keefe, our new “C” day art teacher! We are very excited to have an addition to the art room and Lakeside family.

Phy-Ed Update

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman

Hello Lakeside Families!

January is full of fantastic opportunities for activity! Students have been working on improving their soccer skills by dribbling, passing, trapping, and other ball handling drills that improve speed and coordination. This was also a great time for students in grades 3-5 to work on offensive and defensive strategies in small-sided games.

The next few weeks will be filled with jump rope, tumbling, and balance skills. Grades 3-5 will also begin learning more in depth about the 5 Components of Health-Related Physical Fitness: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

Media Specialist Update

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month we are continuing our discussion of digital citizenship by talking about privacy and security. This month our focus is on what is safe and what is unsafe to share online. In kindergarten, we played "Safe or Unsafe" with popsicle stick smiles to talk about information we should keep private. In first grade, we figured out if it was safe to sign up for SongTube (a fake website) based on what information it was asking for. In second grade, students are beginning to talk about our online tracks and the fact that everything we do is a reflection of ourselves and will be there forever. In third grade, we talked about the consequences of being unsafe online with some if/then statements. In fourth grade, we looked at some examples of safe and unsafe online behavior and discussed how to stay safe with our online actions. In fifth grade, we played a Kahoot about staying safe online and then discussed why it is important to keep some things private.

School Counselor Update

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski

Happy 2023!!

Thank you, again, to all who contributed to Lakeside’s “Brighten Someone’s Holiday” tree. I hope you all had a wonderful winter break!

January has been busy! We have had some great visitors at Lakeside already this year. As mentioned in the December newsletter, REACH Counseling visited Lakeside in the beginning of January. REACH Counseling works in conjunction with the Oshkosh Area School District to provide classroom lessons on protective behaviors.

Fifth grade students were also visited by South Park staff. They learned how to register for a class and had an introduction on what it means to do things the “Panther Way”. There will also be additional opportunities later this school year to help 5th graders get ready for their transition to middle school.

Kindergarten, First, and Second grade students are learning that mistakes can be growth opportunities and how to look for the good in situations. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be learning about kindness and organization.

During our January class time, we will also complete the winter SAEBRS screener (the Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk screener). This will help identify social emotional learning needs at a school, class, and individual level.

Technology Update

Technology Update from Mrs. Stephany

Students are continuing to use their Chromebooks for learning. Websites for searching for resources include using kid friendly resources which they can read at their level. Kid Rex at www.kidrex.org is put out by Google. Teachers also use Newsela for current event articles that are at students’ levels. There are a limited number of articles that can be viewed without an account. Parents can create a free account to read articles at home.

Create a Canvas Observer account to see virtually into your child’s classroom. Depending on the age of your child, you may need to contact your child’s teacher or contact Kathleen.Stephany@oshkosh.k12.wi.us to obtain a student pairing code. Canvas is what students will use in the event of a virtual snow day.

Scholastic Book Fair Next Week!

The Lakeside PTO is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair that will be held in the Media Center . The sale will run Wednesday, January 25th through Friday, January 27th during student lunch and recess hours (10:30am - 12:05pm), and also on Thursday, January 26th from 3:15pm - 6:30pm during parent/teacher conferences.

This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet - your child's digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child's eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy!

If you can't make it to the Fair, then shop at our school's Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Yearbook Orders!

Yearbook ordering is available online now! Click HERE to be taken to the prepay link. Yearbooks will be delivered to school sometime in the spring and distributed to the students who ordered. Online ordering is only available for a short time, so act now!

Lakeside's Family Night with the Herd - Don't Miss It!

Lakeside's annual family dance event is coming soon! This year's dance will be held on Friday, March 3rd from 6 - 7:30pm in the Lakeside gym and has a "Beach Day" theme. Information sheets will be coming home with your students next week.

For those of you new to Lakeside, or just new to the dance, this is an annual dance and fundraiser put on by our PTO. Some amazing raffle baskets are put together with donations from Lakeside families, as well as the wider community. Students (and families!) can purchase tickets for an opportunity win a raffle basket at the end of the night. There are also some silent auction items for families to bid on during the evening. Each class has a "theme" for their class-sponsored basket, and families are encouraged to donate items or money for their child's class basket, or just for the baskets overall. Advance purchase of raffle tickets is encouraged in order to skip the ticket line on the night of the dance - watch for order forms coming home next week!

This has been one of the PTO's biggest fundraisers of the year, and has allowed them to generously support our students and staff with donations for classroom materials, providing field trip busing, and much, much more. Of course, it's also just a really great time! So even if you're unable to donate or purchase tickets at this time, don't miss the dance! We appreciate your support in making this fun family event a success!

Out of Attendance Area and Open Enrollment Application Information

"Out of Attendance Area" requests are for OASD-resident families who would like to request a school that is NOT their "home school" in the district.

"Open Enrollment" requests are for families residing in the Oshkosh Area School District who are requesting enrollment in a different district.

Information on the application processes for both of these groups for the 2023-2024 school year can be found HERE, along with important deadlines!

Event RemindersAre you coming to school for an event during the school day? If you know you will be attending an event at school and you've already been scanned using our "Raptor" security system (this year or any prior year), call the office or send me an email ahead of time. I'll have your visitor badge printed and ready to go, and you can skip the line!

Not "Raptored" yet? Please remember to bring your photo ID the first time you come to school for an event during the day. After that first time, we can look you up by name.

Volunteering Reminders What Volunteer Opportunities are Available? - Ask a Librarian Delaware

As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. These applications are to be filled out each school year, but then are good for the remainder of the year, and are effective for all OASD schools. You can find the application HERE.

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 48 hours, so please plan accordingly!
