Hello Lakeside Families,

With March right around the corner, it’s a crucial time to focus on student attendance and prevent chronic absenteeism. Consistent attendance is key to academic success, and we can work together to ensure students stay on track.

  • The start of the second semester is a key time for early intervention. Identifying students with moderate chronic absence now allows us to provide the necessary support before they fall further behind.
  • Absenteeism often spikes in winter due to illness and bad weather. Families can take proactive steps to keep students healthy and prepared for school. (Check out January Tips for more info!)
  • For middle and high school students, empowering them to develop their own strategies for getting to school and tracking their absences can help build responsibility and consistency.

Additionally, the WI Forward Exam for 3rd-5th grade students is also starting in March and April! These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth. Families can help set their children up for success with a few simple strategies:

  • Ensure a good night’s sleep before each testing day to help with focus and energy.
  • Provide a healthy breakfast to fuel their brains for the day ahead.
  • Encourage a positive mindset by reminding students to do their best and stay confident.
  • Avoid scheduling appointments on testing days to minimize disruptions.

Thank you for your support in helping our students feel prepared and ready to shine!

Sincerely,
Mr.King, Principal

Family Spring Dance!

This year's dance is coming up fast!

Please join us on Friday, March 14th from 6 - 7:30pm in the Lakeside gym for our "Candy Land" themed dance.

Don't miss out! Pre-order your tickets by March 5th and receive bonus tickets!  Click HERE to order now.

For those of you new to Lakeside, or just new to the dance, this is an annual dance and fundraiser put on by our PTO. Some amazing raffle baskets are put together with donations from Lakeside families, as well as the wider community. Students (and families!) can purchase tickets for an opportunity to win a raffle basket at the end of the night.

Exciting addition this year: A 50/50 raffle for adults will be held at the dance!

Each class has a special "theme" for their class-sponsored basket, and families are encouraged to donate items or money. We need your help to fill these baskets! Click HERE for a list of all the class themes.

This has been one of the PTO's biggest fundraisers of the year, and has allowed them to generously support our students and staff with donations for classroom materials, providing field trip busing, and much, much more. Of course, it's also just a really great time! So even if you're unable to donate or purchase tickets at this time, don't miss the dance! Your support is appreciated in making this fun family event a success!

Making an Informed Decision: April 1 School Referendum Approaches

We’re just weeks away from a significant moment for our schools—the upcoming vote on the Oshkosh Area School District’s (OASD) $197.8 million facilities referendum. This plan is about more than just buildings—it’s about creating better learning environments and opportunities for our students, improving safety and Americans with Disabilities (ADA) access limitations, and saving money through operational efficiencies, all while maintaining a $0 tax increase to the debt levy. This referendum represents the next step in our community-developed facilities consolidation plan, which began in 2017 and has already delivered significant improvements through Phase 1.

As members of our school community, we know you may have questions or hear questions from others about what this means for our schools. We want to ensure you have the facts and an understanding of the plan before you cast your vote on April 1!

What Will Your Vote Decide?

If the Referendum is Approved:

  • A new consolidated middle school will be built at the Shapiro site (close South Park and Perry Tipler, reducing from three to two westside middle schools)
  • Carl Traeger, Franklin, and Oakwood Elementary schools will be expanded and renovated (close Roosevelt and Shapiro, reducing from seven to five westside elementary schools)
  • Perry Tipler Middle School will be converted into a pre-kindergarten center and recreation department
  • A new auditorium will be added to Oshkosh North High School
  • Air conditioning will be installed at Emmeline Cook, Lakeside, and Read Elementary schools
  • The district will close and seek to sell South Park Middle School, Roosevelt Elementary School, and the downtown recreation center
  • Non-district pre-kindergarten leases will be eliminated (approximately $550,000 annual savings)

WATCH! Here is a 3-minute video explaining the scope of our April 1 Facilities Referendum.

If the Referendum is Not Approved:

First and foremost, the OASD will seek community feedback to understand why it did not pass. After review, a process will be developed to adjust accordingly - with the next opportunity to go to referendum being April 2026. Additionally:

  • South Park students will remain in a 120-year-old building located within a restricted flight zone
  • Virtual learning would be required during emergency repairs at South Park due to insufficient space at other schools
  • Shapiro STEM Academy will still close after the 2025-2026 school year due to low enrollment (Note: Shapiro will close regardless of the referendum outcome)
  • Planned facilities improvements will not be made
  • Annual operational savings from consolidation will not be realized
  • Construction costs are projected to increase by 5% annually, potentially raising the project cost from $198M now to $242M by 2029

Upcoming Information Sessions

There are still several opportunities to learn more and ask questions before the vote. Visit oshkosh.k12.wi.us/referendum-2025/information-sessions for a list of upcoming dates - including information sessions and informal Q&A drop-in sessions.

WATCH! This 30-minute presentation is available for anyone who is not able to attend an information session.

Student Council
.

Student council is planning to do a spirit week associated with our school dance.  Spirit week will be March 10 - March 14, 2025.  Please watch your child’s folder for more information.

Student council members would like to do a fundraising event.  They have decided they want to raise money and donate the money to a local Children’s Hospital.  Therefore we will be having a coin war from 4/21 - 4/25/25.  If you would like to donate you are welcome to donate at our next family night in April.

Clothes Needed!

It's that time of year when the playground gets extra wet and muddy at time, and spills can happen any time of year. Every day we have students coming to the health office in need of a change of clothes, and we could use your help! How?

  • Do you have extra pants or shirts that your children have outgrown and can donate to the office? Please send them in! We could use shirts and pants in sizes 5 through 14/16!
  • Send your child (even the big ones!) to school with an extra change of clothes, if you are able. They can live in their backpack, or stay in their locker until needed. We're always the most comfortable in our own clothes, so this is a great option!
  • If your child does need to borrow clothes from the office for a day, please wash and return the items as quickly as possible so that they can be available for another student in need.

If your child has a fall or spill resulting in wet clothes at school and we don't have something they can fit in, we may need to call you to bring some to school to get them through the end of the day. Thanks for your help - we appreciate it!

Important Reminder from the Health Office

Volunteering RemindersWhat Volunteer Opportunities are Available? - Ask a Librarian Delaware

As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. If you have any questions about this process, please contact our school office at 920.424.0131 or kylene.schrage@oshkosh.k12.wi.us

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 3-4 business days, so please plan accordingly!

Attendance Office InformationIf you need to call your student(s) in for the day, please call the main office at 920-424-0131. You can also email the school secretary at: Kylene.Schrage@oshkosh.k12.wi.us for any absences. As always, please feel free to reach out to the main office with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your help!

Out of Attendance Area and Open Enrollment Application Information

"Out of Attendance Area" requests are for OASD-resident families who would like to request a school that is NOT their "home school" in the district.

Information on the application processes for both of these groups for the 2024-2025 school year can be found HERE, along with important deadlines!
