Black Wolf Bulletin
February 2, 2024; Issue 11
Dear Lakeside Families,
It is hard to believe that it's already February! We are proud of all the hard work happening in our school! Literacy iReady growth rates overall for students in grades 1-5 are at 98% of their yearly progress (when all students are combined together). This is incredible for this time in the year! Our behavior referral data for major behaviors continues to trend much lower than past years. There was only one office referral in the month of January. Way to go Lakeside students!
Coming up next week, our school will celebrate World Read Aloud Day! Each year we celebrate with fun challenges for each class to complete. Each class also has a guest reader that will be reading a picture book to each class. Look for pictures on Facebook from this event! We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14. Classrooms will have parties at the end of the school day to pass out their Valentines.
We value two way communication and appreciate the great participation in our winter conferences last week. If there is ever a celebration, question, or concern that you would like to share, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher first. As a school district, we are committed to responding to your email and phone requests within 36 hours. If you need extra support with a question or concern, please reach out to me next. I will respond within 36 hours. If there is a message that needs to get to your child about pick up plans, please reach out directly to Mrs. Schrage in the office (before 2pm whenever possible). We hope that your child's daily experience at school is positive and safe. Our mission is to develop strong connections and ensure all students are learning and growing! Thanks for your support and continued partnership in your child's journey in elementary school!

A Note From The Health Office
FRIENDLY REMINDER: When calling your child's school to report their absence, please relay the symptoms they are having to the school office so that the District can continue to report to the health department accurately.
We Need Your Help!
It's that time of year when the playground gets extra wet, muddy and snowy at times, and spills can happen any time of the year. We have students coming to the health office every day in need of a change of clothes and we could use your help! How?
- Send your child (even the big ones) to school with an extra change of clothes if you are able. They can live in their backpack, or stay in their locker until needed. We're always the most comfortable in our own clothes, so this is a great option.
- If your child does need to borrow clothes from the office for the day, please wash and return the items as quickly as possible so that they can be available for another student in need.
- Do you have extra pants or shirts that your children have outgrown and can donate to the office? Please send them in! We could use shirts and pants in sizes 5 through 14/16.
If your child has a fall or spill resulting in wet clothes at school and we don't have something they can fit in, we may need to call you to bring some to school to get them through the end of the day. Thanks for your help-we appreciate it!

Staff Introductions - Welcome to Lakeside
Over the course of a few newsletters, we'll introduce you to some staff members that just joined us this semester. Check out their introductions below!
Staff Introductions - Welcome to Lakeside!
Staff Member: Emily Dorr
Role at Lakeside: Music Teacher
More about me:
Hello! My name is Emily Dorr, and I am excited to be joining the school family at Lakeside Elementary as a music specialist! I am originally from St. Paul, Minnesota and I am a graduate of Lawrence University, where I recently received my Bachelor’s of Music degree in General and Instrumental Music Education with a minor in French. I completed my student teaching in the Oshkosh Area School District and this will be my first year teaching! I am looking forward to being in Oshkosh again and making wonderful music! Outside of school I love to travel, cook, try a new coffee shop, and do crafts such as embroidery!
Lakeside Family Spring Dance!
Lakeside's annual family dance event is coming soon! This year's dance will be held on Friday, March 15th from 6 - 7:30pm in the Lakeside gym and has a "Tie Dye" theme. Information sheets came home with your students last week.
For those of you new to Lakeside, or just new to the dance, this is an annual dance and fundraiser put on by our PTO. Some amazing raffle baskets are put together with donations from Lakeside families, as well as the wider community. Students (and families!) can purchase tickets for an opportunity tp win a raffle basket at the end of the night. Each class has a "theme" for their class-sponsored basket, and families are encouraged to donate items or money for their child's class basket, or just for the baskets overall. Advance purchase of raffle tickets is encouraged in order to skip the ticket line on the night of the dance.
This has been one of the PTO's biggest fundraisers of the year, and has allowed them to generously support our students and staff with donations for classroom materials, providing field trip busing, and much, much more. Of course, it's also just a really great time! So even if you're unable to donate or purchase tickets at this time, don't miss the dance! We appreciate your support in making this fun family event a success!
Out of Attendance Area and Open Enrollment Application Information
"Out of Attendance Area" requests are for OASD-resident families who would like to request a school that is NOT their "home school" in the district.
"Open Enrollment" requests are for families residing in the Oshkosh Area School District who are requesting enrollment in a different district.
Information on the application processes for both of these groups for the 2024-2025 school year can be found HERE, along with important deadlines!
Snow Gear and Winter Playground RemindersStudents should come to school wearing their boots and snow pants, particularly students who are dropped off. Students are not allowed to enter the building to put on their snow gear, so they should be wearing it when they arrive at school.
Also, boots (snow or rain, as the weather dictates) will be required for any of the playground equipment or the grassy areas until late into the spring. Having boots for outside and shoes for inside helps us keep our classrooms clean. If students are not wearing boots, they will have to remain on the blacktop area only. Thank you for your cooperation!
Pollution Solution UPDATE:Do you have an overflowing abundance of plastic grocery bags that you don't know what to do with? We have a solution for you! Our students who are in Pollution Solution are working hard to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic bags to be recycled into a Trex Bench for our school. From the last time we sent out this newsletter we had collected a whopping 336 pounds of plastic bags, but THANKS TO ALL OF YOU we almost doubled that! Our new total is 654 pounds! Only 346 pounds more to go. Please read the information below to see how you can help Lakeside achieve this goal. Send in your plastic bags with your child(ren) or drop them off at one of our doors. We are happy to take them off your hands.
Volunteering Reminders
As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. These applications are to be filled out each school year, but then are good for the remainder of the year, and are effective for all OASD schools. You can find the application HERE.
Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 3-4 business days, so please plan accordingly!
Project Undercover
The Mid Morning Kiwanis Club has donated brand new warm socks and underwear to every grade school in the Oshkosh Area School District. We have many sizes available of these brand new socks and underwear for our families here at Lakeside. If you are in need of these items, please reach out to our school office or our school counselor and we will happily provide these free items to you.
