Dear Lakeside Families,

February has been a busy month at Lakeside! This week, we've enjoyed celebrating Valentine's Day and a spirit week for the 100th Day of School! Next week, we will have a special visit and presentation from Dean Robbins, author of many amazing children's picture books about real life superheroes. Mr. Robbins will be sharing his presentation with the entire school at 1pm on Friday, February 24th. Families are encouraged to join us for the presentation! Please arrive early, so that you can be checked in at the front office. A book signing will follow the presentation, so please bring your own copy of one of Mr. Robbins' books to have signed!

Mid-year data is in and we are seeing great successes! Here are some recent Lakeside student data celebrations:

At the beginning of the school year, we had 82% students who indicated they had a trusted adult at school. We now have 98% of students with a trusted adult! The students still in need of an adult connection have been paired with an adult (of their choice) to build a deeper connection.
We also started the school year with 98% students who felt safe at school. That number is now 100%!!
In literacy, we are seeing great growth from students. Across grades 3-5 in literacy, we have already made 88% progress toward typical growth in our mid year data! 45% of Lakeside’s 3rd-5th graders are meeting grade level expectations. We look forward to seeing this continue to grow! We are seeing students that are making 200%, 300% or more progress in half of a year.
Spelling is improving according to PALS data and teachers are using blending, segmenting, and orthographic mapping. We are seeing progress!!
Our math data from grades 3-5 shows that students have made 56% progress toward typical growth in mid year data.

As we continue to keep our eye on data measures, we also look at student's progress anecdotally. Multiple measures help us recognize next steps for growth for each child. We look forward to all the growth we'll continue to see in learners as the spring semester continues!

Specialist Updates

Art Update - Keefe

Art Update from Ms. Keefe:

Kindergarten: We are finishing our Abstract Alphabet Collage and starting a lesson on Grandma Moses.

1st Grade: We just finished our Winter Murals and next we will also start learning about Grandma Moses and watercolor painting.

2nd & 3rd Grades: We are waiting for our Ceramic Fish to be fired and then we will paint them, while we wait we are starting a lesson about Frida Kahlo and learning about printmaking.

4th & 5th Grades: We are starting to watercolor our still lives after learning about the Renaissance and drawing from observation and then we will start our Stuffed Paper Sculptures.

Art Update - Wollangk

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

5th Grade - 5th grade has moved into their clay project, focusing on construction of functional form.

4th Grade - Are becoming Paleontologists, creating their own fossils after studying the drawings of Mary Anning.

3rd Grade - Have finished their snowman profiles and are beginning their self portrait unit inspired by the works of artist Lois Mailou Jones.

2nd Grade - 2nd grade is creating frosting topped cupcakes in the style of Wayne Thiebaud’s delicious looking artwork.

1st Grade - 1st grade, Van Gogh inspired, still lives are almost done and are looking fantastic!

Kindergarten - Penguins are up on display and we are currently working on “R” for Robots, look for fun shapes and creative designs soon.

Music Update

Music Update from Ms. Flood:

Hello all, my name is Megan Flood, and I am the long-term substitute teacher for music! Since starting in late January, all grades have been working on the fundamentals of music. Kindergarten and 1st graders have been learning about the difference between high and low sounds, fast and slow sounds, and playing with egg shakers. 2nd and 3rd graders have been learning about solfege patterns, time signatures, and playing with rhythm sticks. 4th and 5th graders have been reviewing their solfege syllables, performing rhythms in different meters, and playing with Boomwhackers.

Phy-Ed Update

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman:

Hello Lakeside Families!

Students in K-5 had the opportunity to learn about the 5 Components of Health-Related Physical Fitness: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. K-2 students learned through station activities where our hearts were pumping, our muscles got stronger, and our bodies became more flexible. Students in grades 3-5 learned these components through circuit training.

Roller skating is penciled in after spring break. Please take time to make sure your child knows how to tie shoelaces. Is loop, swoop, and pull too tricky? A quick search on YouTube will leave you with many options that work!

Media Specialist Update

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month we are continuing our discussion of Digital Citizenship by talking about our digital footprints and digital identities. This month the kindergarten students watched a video about fun things we can do online as well as the rules of how to keep ourselves safe online. First grade students learned about the internet traffic light and talked about safe and unsafe websites. Second grade students talked about our online tracks and then did a maze to further talk about what is safe and what is unsafe to share online. Third graders talked about our online identities and how we want to be honest but also not overshare. Fourth graders talked about how we can impact other people’s digital footprint and how we need to be mindful of everything we post and do online. Fifth graders talked about our online identities and how we really need to be mindful of how we want others to view us.

School Counselor Update

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski:

Happy February!

Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students have been learning about how to look for the positives in situations, others, and themselves. They are learning about the power of positive thinking. Third grade has also been learning about responsibility and how to be responsible at school and home. Fourth and fifth graders have been learning about having a growth mindset. Did you know that students who have a growth mindset do better in school? Fourth graders will also be learning about gratitude and joy. Fifth graders will also be learning about and creating goals. We have been discussing how each student’s uniqueness contributes to helping our school family be awesome!

KID TIP - Did you know that the recommended hours of sleep per day for elementary students is 9-12 hours? A well rested brain is better at concentrating, problem solving, making positive decisions, learning new information, having more energy for the day, regulating BIG emotions, and getting along with others.

Technology Update

Technology Update from Mrs. Stephany

On February 23th this year, the nation will celebrate the annual Digital Learning Day. This event dates back to 2012. Digital learning combines effective instruction with technology to enhance the student learning experience. As our teachers work with students, they incorporate the use of technology to engage our students. This month during our interest hour, students were able to choose to explore various robots. Thank you for supporting your children with technology as we help them to become college, career, and community ready.

Meet the Author - Dean Robbins

On Friday, February 24th from 1-2pm, award-winning children's author Dean Robbins will visit us for a special event! Mr. Robbins' books for elementary school students have been praised in the New York Times, USA Today, Smithsonian Magazine and Forbes; featured on National Public Radio; chosen for best-of-the-year honors; and adapted for film.

Along with offering presentations on his nonfiction picture books, Dean will sign and personalize copies for any students who bring copies to the event. For a list of the books that Dean has authored, click HERE. All titles are available on Amazon.com or at your local book store.

We'll also have some special dress up days leading up to the event, and parents are welcome to join us for Mr. Robbins' presentation. You can learn more HERE.

REMINDER - Lakeside's annual family dance event is coming soon! We need your help! The raffle baskets are still pretty empty, so please consider sending in items or money for the baskets. Any and all donations help! Click HERE for more information.

This year's dance will be held on Friday, March 3rd from 6 - 7:30pm in the Lakeside gym and has a "Beach Day" theme. Sign up HERE to volunteer at the dance, or to provide snacks! Thank you to all who have donated and signed up already!

For those of you new to Lakeside, or just new to the dance, this is an annual dance and fundraiser put on by our PTO. Some amazing raffle baskets are put together with donations from Lakeside families, as well as the wider community. Students (and families!) can purchase tickets for an opportunity win a raffle basket at the end of the night. There are also some silent auction items for families to bid on during the evening. Each class has a "theme" for their class-sponsored basket, and families are encouraged to donate items or money for their child's class basket, or just for the baskets overall.

This has been one of the PTO's biggest fundraisers of the year, and has allowed them to generously support our students and staff with donations for classroom materials, providing field trip busing, and much, much more. Of course, it's also just a really great time! So even if you're unable to donate or purchase tickets at this time, don't miss the dance! We appreciate your support in making this fun family event a success!

Staff Introductions - Welcome (back) to Lakeside!

Staff Member: Jodi Jari

Role at Lakeside: Part-time ESOL (English Speakers of Language) teacher

Experience: I recently retired from OASD after teaching for 30+ years. My last teaching assignment was 1st grade at Lakeside for 6 years. I am now back to my roots, as I taught ELL (English Language Learners) students when I first began my career in teaching.

Family/Hobbies: I have been married to my husband for 30+ years. We have two sons, Spencer and Brady. Spencer married Bailee and they own the Piggly Wiggly stores in Omro and Oshkosh. Brady is finishing his undergraduate work at UWO before continuing on to his doctorate degree. My family is the most important thing in my life. I do enjoy reading, sewing, hiking, and spending time at our cabin.

Give-Education Day on March 1st

On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, the Oshkosh community will come together for 24 hours of giving to support the incredible work of teachers, staff, and students in the Oshkosh Area School District (OASD). All funds raised will be used to make the following projects a reality in the next school year:

Materials and supplies for OASD classrooms that are beyond the building budget via our Donors Choose Partnership.
Grants supporting new and innovative classroom projects.
Basic needs items for our most vulnerable students, including clothing, hygiene items, and school supplies.

Event RemindersAre you coming to school for an event during the school day? If you know you will be attending an event at school and you've already been scanned using our "Raptor" security system (this year or any prior year), call the office or send me an email ahead of time. I'll have your visitor badge printed and ready to go, and you can skip the line!

Not "Raptored" yet? Please remember to bring your photo ID the first time you come to school for an event during the day. After that first time, we can look you up by name.

Volunteering Reminders What Volunteer Opportunities are Available? - Ask a Librarian Delaware

As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. These applications are to be filled out each school year, but then are good for the remainder of the year, and are effective for all OASD schools. You can find the application HERE.

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 48 hours, so please plan accordingly!
