Dear Lakeside Families,

We are nearing the completion of WI Forward testing here at Lakeside, with just a few make-up sessions remaining. I want to take a moment to share how incredibly proud I am of all our students. They have shown tremendous focus, perseverance, and a positive attitude throughout the testing process. Each student truly did their best to represent not only Lakeside Elementary, but the Oshkosh Area School District as a whole. Way to go, Lakeside Black Wolves!

Last week, our students also participated in a statewide tornado drill as part of Wisconsin’s Severe Weather Awareness Week. It’s an important reminder of the need to be prepared both at school and at home in case of severe weather.

As a family, here are a few tips to stay safe if a tornado is possible:

Have a plan: Know where to go in your home during a tornado warning—typically a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.
Stay informed: Keep a weather radio or phone alerts active to receive warnings quickly.
Prepare an emergency kit: Include items like water, flashlights, batteries, and important medications.
Practice your plan: Just like we do at school, practicing helps everyone know what to do and stay calm in an emergency.

Thank you for your continued support as we wrap up testing and continue to prioritize safety and learning every day. If you have any questions or need resources to help create a weather safety plan at home, feel free to reach out.

Reminder: It is spring in Wisconsin and that means our weather could change throughout the day. We know that April can be rainy, muddy, and cool, so here is a review of our outdoor weather guidelines:

Below 50 degrees: students need a coat
Between 50-60 degrees: students need to wear long sleeves
61 degrees and above: student’s choice (shorts are allowed)
We also require boots for playing in the fields (unless they are completely dry).

Tick Bites | Lyme Disease | MedlinePlus

It's tick season!

I know, it’s not something to be excited about, but we can learn about ticks to make tick season more tolerable. The beautiful playground and woods surrounding our school are the exact type of area that ticks love to live in. So, what can our students do to prevent ticks from attaching to their skin?

Students should watch for ticks on their clothes when entering the building in the morning and after any recess. If the tick is crawling on their skin or clothes they should remove the tick immediately and notify a teacher or recess supervisor. If a student finds a tick that is already attached to their skin they should come to the health office as soon as they notify their teacher. While we are unable to remove the attached tick at school, we will call and notify parents what we have found. Parents can then come to school and remove the tick or take the child home to remove the tick. Please remember that if you do remove an attached tick at home it is best to keep the tick in a clear baggie in case you later need to identify the type of tick.

As we are approaching the end of the school year here is just a reminder about over the counter medications. Prescription medications will also be sent home in back pack on the last day of school with a written or verbal from parent/ guardian.

End of the Year Update from the Health Office

All medications are to be picked up by the parent/guardian on or before the last day of
school. Kristin Mike, LPN, will be reaching out regarding parental consent to send home
over the counter medications (ie. cough drops) home with your student(s). Our policy
will not allow us to keep them for the next school year. If there is NO response regarding
the medication and they are not picked up/ sent home by the end of the day on the last
day of school, June 5th, the medication will be properly disposed of.

If your child has a current health plan or emergency plan on file with the school, you will
receive a copy during the summer to update for the upcoming school year.

If your child has a change in their health or has a healthcare need at school, please
email our school district nurse, Mikaila Peterson during the summer and she will contact
you at the beginning of the school year to discuss. Email: mikaila.peterson@oshkosh.k12.wi.us

If your child will need to take medication at school, please work with your doctor to have
the following form completed and signed before the start of the school year. As a
reminder, the directions on the medication bottle must match the written order on the
medication request form.

If you have a child with a severe allergy, asthma, or seizures the following forms will
need to be completed for our school nurse. Inhalers, Epi-Pens, Allergy medications, etc.,
must be in their original containers. Expiration dates will be monitored.

Art Update - Ms. Wollangk

5th Grade - Students are learning highlight and shadow techniques with oil pastel.

4th Grade - It’s our clay unit, inspired by Georgia O’Keefe, look for flower bowls to be coming home soon.

3rd Grade - Third is taking inspiration from artist Wayne Thiebaud, creating yummy pop art.

2nd Grade - Ask our second grade friends about complementary color schemes, they are just finishing up their organic shaped flowers and have to choose their set of colors.

1st Grade - We are working on primary and secondary colors as we finish our still lives, we will be heading out of this world with secondary spaceships.

Kindergarten - “D” is for Dragonfly, new media and collaging techniques in this project.

*We are gearing up for artworks to head home as our school year heads into the final months. If you have brown bags you could send to school with your students, it would be greatly appreciated.

Music Update - Ms. Dorr

Music Update from Ms. Dorr:

K-1 students learned about musical opposites and are now working on identifying and reading rhythms!

2nd and 3rd grade students are wrapping up their instruments of the orchestra unit!

4th and 5th grade students have started their ukulele unit! They are working on naming the parts of the instrument, strumming, and playing their first chords.

Phy-Ed Update - Mrs. Homman

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman:

Hello Lakeside Families!

We are “rolling” into the month of April! Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are roller skating during Physical Education. We will be practicing everything from standing safely to maneuvering through obstacles. There will even be a Glow Skate on April 23rd (A Day) and 25th (C Day)!

In the upcoming weeks, we will practice the following skills:

Striking with an implement (Kindergarten through 3rd grades)
Archery (4th and 5th grades)
Mini golf
Yard games

Media Specialist Update - Mrs. Daniels

Media Update from Mrs. Daniels

In March our students celebrated Read Across America Week and participated in our March Reading Madness Tournament of the Books! Each year our Media Center likes to highlight an exceptional list of picture books by having the class read through sixteen titles that are set up in a bracket formation. Over the course of the month the classes narrow down their favorites to one champion. The classes hand in their brackets and Mrs. Daniels uses those results to declare a Lakeside winner. This year the list was so amazing it resulted in a tie! The Yellow Bus by Loren Long and Magic Ramen by Andrea Wang. Hopefully you get a chance to check these titles out of our library or the Oshkosh Public Library

School Counselor Update - Mrs. Lubinski

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski:

Hooray for Spring!!

Kindergarten and first grade students have been learning about personal space and their invisible hula hoop. They are also learning about friendship and problem solving skills. Second grade students have been learning about, and practicing, teamwork. Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade are identifying their skills and interests and learning how both can lead to a career path. Third grade students are also exploring strategies to use when they are feeling worried. They practiced changing their “what ifs” to positives. Fourth grade is learning about the power of their self talk and how it can be helpful or unhelpful. Additionally, fifth grade is learning more about their brains, executive functioning skills, and some ideas to help them grow stronger.

During our April class time, we will also complete the spring SAEBRS screener (the Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk screener). This will help identify social emotional learning needs at a school, class, and individual level.

Lightning loves to learn about careers and would love to learn about your career. Lightning would be thrilled to visit your workplace. Parents/Caregivers have the opportunity to bring Lightning to their workplace and take a few photos of Lightning at work (be creative and have fun). We hope that Lightning can visit lots of careers this year!!!

Family Night Event - April 24th

Lakeside's Family Night event will be Thursday, April 24th from 5 - 7pm. This evening will be packed with fun activities designed to encourage learning. We are excited to share our learning with you and for you to experience what your child does in their literacy classes every day. We look forward to your participation in different literacy activities and for you to even see what next year might be all about!

Events for the night include:

The PTO will be providing popcorn for all guests as they head out for the night
Scholastic Book Fair BOGO from 5-7pm
Six different literacy themed stations in each of our grade levels
Shop the Scholastic Book Fair
A display of our classroom work
Opportunities to explore what is to come next year

Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from April 21 - 25 during lunch recess (11:00am - 12:15pm) and April 24th from 5pm - 7pm at Lakeside Elementary's Library.

Lakeside PTO

May Community Interest Hour

Lakeside Elementary School is looking for outside organizations to volunteer to come to Lakeside on Friday, May 2nd from approximately 1-2:30 PM and offer an activity for students to experience. Students would have the opportunity to rotate through 3 of the activities, each lasting 25 minutes.

We are hoping to inspire our students to try new things and be aware of different community organizations.

Each of the areas have a smartboard in the room where the presenter can show visuals on the board if needed. Also, a staff member will be in the room to support. We would like to offer the students as many hands-on experiences as possible, so any information presented should be brief so they can have enough time to complete the activity.

Some previous examples were, cookie decorating, yoga, RC racing, Mtoxins. So if you have a hands on activity you are willing to lead, please fill out the information below. Someone will reach out to you in the upcoming weeks.

Get Ready for the 2025-26 School Year!

The Oshkosh Area School District’s Annual Student Update (Enrollment/Registration) for returning K-12 students and for new 4K students will take place April 1 - September 1, 2025. Students must be enrolled by September 1. While the deadline is September 1, we encourage you to complete this process as soon as possible to secure your child's spot for the next school year.

Your child’s school for the 2025-2026 school year will be listed in IC. If you have recently moved or if you were involuntarily transferred due to space limitations at your home school,

please be sure to check this as it may be different from where your child is currently attending.

This annual enrollment process is mandatory, and your student's place at their school will be reserved for the upcoming academic year. You'll update your demographic and contact information through the Infinite Campus (IC) Parent Portal.

We Need Your Help-Donations Needed!

If you're doing some spring cleaning and would like to donate some of your child(ren)'s clothing they have outgrown, we would be happy to take them off your hands. We are in the most need of larger sized pants and shirts, but we won't turn anything down. This time of year our playground gets extra wet and muddy at time, and spills can happen any time of year. Every day we have students coming to the health office in need of a change of clothes, and we could use your help! How?

Do you have extra pants or shirts that your children have outgrown and can donate to the office? Please send them in! We could use shirts and pants in sizes 5 through 14/16!
Send your child (even the big ones!) to school with an extra change of clothes, if you are able. They can live in their backpack, or stay in their locker until needed. We're always the most comfortable in our own clothes, so this is a great option!
If your child does need to borrow clothes from the office for a day, please wash and return the items as quickly as possible so that they can be available for another student in need.

If your child has a fall or spill resulting in wet clothes at school and we don't have something they can fit in, we may need to call you to bring some to school to get them through the end of the day. Thanks for your help - we appreciate it!

Attendance Office InformationIf you need to call your student(s) in for the day, please call the main office at 920-424-0131. If you need to leave a voicemail, please state your student(s) full name, grade, reason for absence and also any symptoms your student may be experiencing. You can also email the school secretary at: kylene.schrage@oshkosh.k12.wi.us for any absences. If you need to pick up your student early for an any reason, please notify the main office ahead of time, so we can make sure to have your student ready for you. As always, please feel free to reach out to the main office with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your help.

Field trip season is coming up fast and if you are interested in chaperoning a field trip or volunteering by helping in your child's classroom, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. If you DID NOT fill out a volunteer application last year (23-24) please click HERE to begin the application process. All verified backgrounds checks are good for three years, and are effective for all OASD schools. If you have any questions about this process, please contact our school office at 920.424.0131 or kylene.schrage@oshkosh.k12.wi.us

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 3-4 business days, so please plan accordingly!
