Dear Lakeside Families,

We were thrilled with the summer weather this week! With a week of no rain, students were able to play out in the fields. Kickball was a hit this week! We know that April can be rainy, muddy, and cool though, so here is a review of our outdoor weather guidelines:

Below 50 degrees: students need a coat
Between 50-60 degrees: students need to wear long sleeves
61 degrees and above: student’s choice (shorts are allowed)

We also require boots for playing in the fields (unless they are completely dry- highly unlikely, but they were this week!!).

This upcoming week, we will have a spring tornado drill. This is a great time to review where to go in your home for a tornado.

Did you know...

Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually? Last year Wisconsin had 40 confirmed tornadoes, but the state has had as many as 62 in one year!
Peak tornado season in Wisconsin is April to August but can occur any time. Kenosha had tornadoes as part of the January 7, 2008 storms.
Tornadoes are most frequent between 4 PM and 9 PM.
About 80% of tornadoes that hit Wisconsin are relatively weak, with winds under 110 mph. Only 1% are violent with winds over 170 mph.

Finally, all families are welcome to join us for our final Family Engagement Night on Thursday, April 27th from 5:00- 7:00pm! All of our Lakeside students will be showcasing their learning for families! Bring your entire family! The Scholastic Book Fair will also be going on during Family Engagement Night. Our new playground equipment will be showcased, a technology informational session will be available for parents of 3rd-5th graders, and PTO will be providing a Little Caesar's pizza slice and side items for dinner, free of charge! We look forward to seeing you there!

Specialist Updates

Art Update - Ms. Keefe

Art Update from Ms. Keefe:

In art at Lakeside, we are learning about spring time, bumble bees and new art mediums!

In kindergarten and first grade, we are learning about the importance of bees in our environment and how they benefit our lives. We are creating our own bees that we are drawing and then cutting out and piecing together like a puzzle. We are then gluing these onto a stamped background piece of paper which will get us talking about printmaking and stamping!

In second and third grade, we are learning about spring time now that it has finally come to visit us! We are creating garden landscapes that have veggies, fruits, flowers, animals, bugs and anything else students can think of. This gets us talking about words like foreground, background and horizon lines, which create our landscapes. We also get to talk about the importance of being outside and how it positively affects our physical and mental health!

In fourth and fifth grade, we are working on our stuffed paper sculptures. In this lesson, we can pick anything we want and we draw it two times on large paper, trace each with permanent marker, paint both pieces, and then staple and stuff them! This gets us working on a larger scale, and thinking about proportions and our compositions.

Art Update - Ms. Wollangk

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

5th Grade - We are studying continuous lines as we create a Fauvist self portrait.

4th Grade - Our seascapes are ready to hang and we move into our clay unit.

3rd Grade - Our felt blooms are ready for our running, back and cross stitches.

2nd Grade - Our tiles are just about ready for display!

1st Grade - The rainbows are almost done and we will be moving into the next “medium”, paper.

Kindergarten - Kinders did a great job applying paint and then blotting it away. Their warm color kites look great against their cold color skies.

Music Update - Ms. Flood

Music Update from Ms. Flood:

Hi all, we have been working hard on our spring concert music! We are so excited for you to hear the songs that we have been working on. Please keep an eye out, because in a few weeks, a letter will be coming home for parents and guardians with more information about the concert. The concert will be held on Monday, May 15th at 6:00 pm in the Alberta Kimball Auditorium of Oshkosh West High School. Every student has a special role in this concert, so it is important that your student is there. If you know that your student will not be able to attend, please let me know by email (megan.flood@oshkosh.k12.wi.us) so we can plan ahead. Thank you!

Phy-Ed Update - Mrs. Homman

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman:

Hello Lakeside Families!

We are “rolling” through the month of April! Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are roller skating during Physical Education. We will be practicing everything from standing safely to maneuvering through obstacles. We will have the opportunity to try something new- Blazepods! Blazepods are a newer exercise tool used to improve reaction time, balance, speed, coordination, and agility.

In the upcoming weeks, we will practice the following skills:

Throwing Frisbees to a target
Learning a few different yard games
Team games (offensive and defensive strategies, sportsmanship)

Media Specialist Update - Ms. Collins

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This year students have worked hard to learn about many areas of digital citizenship including: why it is important to balance their screen time and take breaks from their technology; how to keep themselves safe and keep private information private; what our digital footprints are and how we need to “trust our guts”; and how we need to always try to be upstanders and use kind language online! So, this month we are celebrating all of the students' hard work learning about digital citizenship throughout the year. For each class’s celebration they were given a list of activities to choose from as a class. One of the choices that was selected by the majority of the kindergarten, first, and second grade classes was storytime with Blue-Bot, one of our programmable robots. Students listened to a story and then helped tell Blue-Bot the story by coding him to follow the path of our story. Another popular choice with students was breakouts, both digital and physical. These breakouts are similar to escape rooms. The students are asked to solve clues to unlock locks – for the digital breakouts students do this on their Chromebooks and for the physical they are solving puzzles to solve actual locks! All of the students have learned a lot this year and it has been exciting to see them celebrate all that they have learned.

School Counselor Update - Mrs. Lubinski

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski:

Hooray for Spring!!

Kindergarten students have been practicing identifying their feelings. First grade students have been learning about how they can be responsible both at school and home. Responsibility is part of the Lakeside Way (Respectful, Responsible, and Safe). Second grade students have been learning about, and practicing, teamwork. Lakeside’s older students have been learning about their interests and strengths and how knowledge of those might relate to a career. 4th and 5th grade students explored what they like and dislike using the Career Interest Inventory. Kindergarten and first grade will also be learning more about friendship skills and conflict resolution.

During our April class time, we will also complete the spring SAEBRS screener (the Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk screener). This will help identify social emotional learning needs at a school, class, and individual level.

Family Night Event - April 27th

Lakeside's Family Night event will be Thursday, April 27th from 5 - 7pm. Come join us to celebrate all the wonderful learning your child has done this year! This year's engagement night will be an open-house style.

Events for the night include:

Student learning showcase in classrooms
Visit and play on the NEW Lakeside playground equipment!
BINGO board scavenger hunt around the school
Shop the Scholastic Book Fair (see below)

5th Grade Biography Fair

The fifth grade biography fair will be on Tuesday, April 18th. We will have three open house sessions from 9:30-10:30, 1:30-2:30, and 3:15-4:15. Fifth grade families are invited to attend during any of these times. If you come to either of the first two sessions, don't forget to check in at the office! If you haven't been "Raptored" before, we will need to see your driver's license. We look forward to seeing everyone!

On Wednesday, May 10th the 2nd grade teachers would like to invite all of the 2nd grade families to join us for a picnic in the park.

When: Wednesday, May 10th

Time: 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Where: Fugleberg Park located at 2000 Doty St, Oshkosh, WI 54902

What to bring: Pack a picnic dinner for your family. Bring a blanket or chairs to sit on.

Who: 2nd grade students and their families.

What to expect: A member of the Oshkosh Public Library will be joining us to promote summer reading. She will be bringing information about the summer reading program and information about other activities the library has to offer for families.

This will be a fun way to connect with other families and get to know one another better.

The teachers will be bringing popsicles for all children in attendance. In order to plan for enough popsicles, we would like you to RSVP so we can plan accordingly.

A back up rain date will be Wednesday, May 17th.

We Need Your Help!It's that time of year when the playground gets extra wet and muddy at time, and spills can happen any time of year. Every day we have students coming to the health office in need of a change of clothes, and we could use your help! How?

Send your child (even the big ones!) to school with an extra change of clothes, if you are able. They can live in their backpack, or stay in their locker until needed. We're always the most comfortable in our own clothes, so this is a great option!
If your child does need to borrow clothes from the office for a day, please wash and return the items as quickly as possible so that they can be available for another student in need.
Do you have extra pants or shirts that your children have outgrown and can donate to the office? Please send them in! We could use shirts and pants in sizes 5 through 14/16!

If your child has a fall or spill resulting in wet clothes at school and we don't have something they can fit in, we may need to call you to bring some to school to get them through the end of the day. Thanks for your help - we appreciate it!

Event RemindersAre you coming to school for an event during the school day? If you know you will be attending an event at school and you've already been scanned using our "Raptor" security system (this year or any prior year), call the office or send me an email ahead of time. I'll have your visitor badge printed and ready to go, and you can skip the line!

Not "Raptored" yet? Please remember to bring your photo ID the first time you come to school for an event during the day. After that first time, we can look you up by name.

Volunteering Reminders What Volunteer Opportunities are Available? - Ask a Librarian Delaware

As a reminder, if you are interested in volunteering by helping in your child's classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must have a pre-approved volunteer application on file before the volunteering event. These applications are to be filled out each school year, but then are good for the remainder of the year, and are effective for all OASD schools. You can find the application HERE.

Important!: Once you have completed your application, let the office know so that we can request that the application be processed; this does not happen automatically, and can take up to 48 hours, so please plan accordingly!
