5th Grade - 5th has moved into learning about Emphasis with our Chinese Pagodas.

4th Grade - We are traveling to Peru for our next subject, Llamas! (Not to mention; Background, Middle and Foregrounds)

3rd Grade - Vivid color schemes and Day of the Dead, 3rd is learning about Mexico.

2nd Grade - Ancient Greece allows us to experiment with a new technique, Drawing on our urns using scratch method.

1st Grade - Cubism please, as well as rainbow theory while we study the Spaniard, Pablo Picasso.

Kindergarten - “P” is for Pumpkin. Kinders are practicing cutting skills while we place our perfect, pint-sized papers in our pumpkins. A mosaic technique from Morocco.

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski

It’s getting a little chillier out! Happy Fall!

Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grade have been learning about and practicing 2 great ways to problem solve - the “wheel of choice” and the “time machine”.  They have also been learning strategies to help when they are having BIG feelings. Fourth grade has been learning about peaceful ways to solve conflict. Fifth grade has been learning how to be caring communicators. Lakeside students are such great problem solvers!!! 

During our October class time, we will also complete the fall SAEBRS screener (the Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk screener). This will help identify social emotional learning needs at a school, class, and individual level. 

Our friend Lightning is back again this year to help students learn about different career opportunities.  Lightning loves to learn about careers and would love to learn about your career. Lightning would be thrilled to visit your workplace. Parents/Caregivers have the opportunity to bring Lightning to their workplace and take a few photos of Lightning at work (be creative and have fun) . We hope that Lightning can visit lots of careers this year!!!

With cold and flu season upon us already, your child may have a sore throat, runny nose, headache etc. and you may want your child to bring cough drops, Tylenol  or other medications to school.  All medications need to be brought into the office and given in the office.  Your child should not keep any medications in their backpacks.  All medications need a signed medication form in the office.  If you would like a form to fill out, please call or email the office to send one home with your child.  It only takes a minute to fill out! 

Please remind your child to cover their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and most importantly...WASH HANDS!!!  Washing hands can prevent the spread of diseases.

Your child should stay home if they have any of these symptoms: 100 degree temp or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, thick mucus from the nose, excessive drowsiness, undiagnosed rash or open sores, pain that interferes with learning such as; earache, red, itchy eyes with discharge, sore throat with difficulty swallowing or a persistent, productive cough.  This helps prevent the spread of illness to others in school.  If you child has any of these symptoms they should stay home and be free from symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.

FRIENDLY REMINDER: When calling your child's school to report their absence, please relay the symptoms they are having to the school office so that the District can continue to report to the health department accurately.

Health Update: Cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth and Strep Throat Increasing

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) and Strep Throat are spreading throughout our community and in some classrooms. Please take a moment to review the information below on how to help prevent the spread of illness at school and at home.

🖐 Prevention of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

HFMD is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects children.
Here are some simple but effective ways to prevent its spread:

Practice Good Hygiene:

• Wash hands often with soap and water—especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers, or before eating.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.

• Dispose of used tissues and clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces like toys, doorknobs, and countertops.

Avoid Close Contact with Infected Individuals:

• Keep children home if they have symptoms of HFMD.

• Avoid sharing items like towels, cups, and toothbrushes.

• Keep children with HFMD away from other children and adults.

Protect Children in School and Daycare:

• Disinfect toys and surface regularly.

• Monitor children for symptoms and isolate them if necessary

• Encourage daycare and school staff to implement strict hygiene practices.

Other Tips:

• Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly and drink clean water.

• Drink clean water and avoid swimming in untreated water.

• Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water aren’t available.

Vaccinations: 

• There is currently no vaccine available for HFMD.

Other Tips: 

• Avoid touching your face.

• Wear gloves when handling contaminated materials.

• Encourage children to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

😷 Preventing Strep Throat

Strep throat is a contagious bacterial infection that spreads easily, especially among children.

Good Hygiene Habits:

• Wash hands frequently with soap and water.

• Use hand sanitizer when needed.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Avoid Contact & Sharing:

• Stay away from people who have strep throat as it is highly contagious.

• Don’t share eating utensils, cups, or personal items.

Healthy Habits:

• Eat nutritious foods, get plenty of rest, and stay active to support a strong immune system.

• Keep surfaces like doorknobs, phones, and countertops clean.

• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

Get Vaccinated: 

• There is no specific vaccine for strep throat, but the pneumococcal vaccine can help protect against some of the bacteria that cause it.

If Diagnosed:

• Follow your doctor’s instructions for antibiotics and rest.

• Stay home until fever-free and after at least 24 hours of antibiotics to avoid spreading infection.

Remember, these measures can help reduce the risk of developing strep throat, but they are not foolproof. If you experience symptoms of strep throat, such as a sore throat, fever, or swollen lymph nodes, it is important to see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

🧼 Everyday Hygiene Reminders

• Wash hands for at least 20 seconds.

• Use hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available.

• Cover coughs and sneezes.

• Avoid touching your face.

• Don’t share food, drinks, or personal items.

💪 Support Health & Wellness

• Sleep: Make sure children get enough rest each night.

• Nutrition: Eat balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

• Hydration: Drink water throughout the day.

• Exercise: Regular movement boosts the immune system.

• Vaccines: Keep immunizations up to date, including the flu shot.

🏡 When to Stay Home

• Keep sick children home: 

  If your child has a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or is feeling too unwell to participate in school activities, keep them home to rest and avoid spreading germs. 

• Notify the school: 

  If your child does get sick, let the school know their symptoms so they can take appropriate precautions.

Music Update from Ms. Crooks

K-2 have been playing a fun circle game called "pass the pumpkin"! We are moving our bodies to music and keeping a steady beat to some of our favorite popular songs.

3-5 are playing ukulele, we started with practicing open strings and we are now exploring chords. Ask your students about our "railroad tracks".
