Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman

Hello Lakeside Families! 

The first few days of Physical Education have been wonderful! We have been learning routines and expectations, getting lots of movement opportunities, and started learning about the bones in our bodies. Students in kindergarten through second grade are spending time learning and reviewing foundational movements skills, such as pathways, speeds, levels, and directional cues, during game play. Students in third through fifth grade kicked-off the year with a team building unit. We will also take time to learn and review a few favorite playground games. 

Our next unit will focus on throwing and catching. Please take some time to practice overhand and underhand throwing over the next few weeks. Tennis balls, footballs, baseballs, Koosh balls, or teddy bears will do the trick!

Music Update from Ms. Olsen

Hello Lakeside families! We’ve been busy in music class since school started. 

Kindergarten has been learning the four different voice types of shout, sing, whisper, and talk, and when we should use each of these. They’ve also learned how to use the first instrument in class, the Brazilian egg shaker. They do things like echoing the rhythm that I shake to sharpen their developing aural skills. Piggy backing off that, the 1st graders have been using egg shakers to work on ta, titi, and rest (quarter note, eighth notes, and quarter rest), while the 2nd grade have been working on half note and half rest. K-2 has also learned their first hello song (one of four) to warm-up with every music class, and how to belly breathe versus chest breathe. Lastly, we’ve briefly discussed the instrument units for this year. Kindergarten will learn different classroom instruments like triangle and tambourine, 1st grade will start drumming on chairs, and 2nd grade will start piano in groups. 

3rd grade has been using the poison game to review half note and half rest, as well as starting tiri-tiri (sixteenth notes). With the game poison, the students are given a poison rhythm. If they echo that rhythm during the game, they are out. The game goes on until they get sharp enough to catch whenever I clap the poison. 4th and 5th have been using poison to review 3rd grade rhythms, as well as learn syncopated rhythms using dotted quarter note combinations. 3-5 have also been working on creating music using school supplies. We watched a video about students making different beats using rulers, pens, and a flat surface, and I’ve been very impressed with the creations the groups have been inspired to come up with. Lastly, we discussed the big instrument unit each grade will get to do this year. 3rd will be using the tubano drums, 4th will have a bucket drumming unit (buckets and real drumsticks), and the 5th graders will be learning guitar.

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk

Back in the swing of things!

It’s so good to be back in our room with lots of projects ahead of us. Our first projects are our Art to Remember fundraising project and we are off to a great start.

Kinders - Are exploring the alphabet this year and have begun their alphabet soup.

1st - Has reviewed their first initial and played with wax resist!

2nd - Has done a great job practising their owl drawing to transfer it to the final project paper.

3rd - Are experimenting with stylized silhouetted trees.

4th - Have begun exploration into a monochromatic color scheme.

5th - Has a great handle on their textures and values as they explore a desert landscape..

As always, if you are interested in sending materials, our classes can always use thin cardboard like cereal or cracker boxes.

Mrs. Molder's Art Classroom:

I’m so excited to be in the art room with all of the artists! We are all going over art room procedures, expectations, and agreements. Each grade is beginning their art to remember projects. Kindergarten artists are learning about Wassily Kandinsky and creating concentric circles. First grade artists will be working on a bird artwork. Second grade artists are learning about warm and cool colors to create a sun and moon project. Fifth grade artists created their sketchbook covers and will create a seascape next. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone creates this year!

Technology Update from Mrs. Stephany

Learning without Limits

Chromebooks are in use in all classrooms! Students were able to successfully log in and get their Chromebooks ready for learning. Students in Kindergarten through grade two login with a QR code. Grades 3-5 have usernames and passwords that they use.  I am so impressed with all the students carrying their chromebooks and plugging them in to charge correctly. Please encourage your child to continue proper care for these devices as he or she will use the same one while at Lakeside. Also, please talk to your child about keeping passwords private. Canvas is new this year and will be used instead of Google Classroom. Canvas is a Learning Management System and different from Infinite Campus. In the future, we will share how parents can access Canvas to see information such as links, assignments, enrichment, etc

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski

Hello Lakeside Families!

I am so thrilled to be the new School Counselor at Lakeside and am loving getting to know all of the students. Each and every student at Lakeside is SO incredible! In our classroom time together this month, we have been looking at how we can help each other feel included and part of our school family.  We’ve learned how to send wish wells. Lakeside students are amazing at this so if you get a chance, ask your child to show you how! We’ve also learned about our special buddy bench on the playground. Kindergarteners have been learning about different emotions. We are learning ways to take care of ourselves and our friends when we are having BIG emotions. First through fifth graders have been learning about their superpower of EMPATHY.

Media Update from Ms. Collins

Hello from the Lakeside Media Center! My name is Kim Collins, and I am the new Media
Specialist here at Lakeside Elementary. This month in the library we have been working
on getting back into the routine of coming to the library and checking out books, both
beloved classics and some new favorites. Starting in October we will be doing monthly
digital citizenship lessons to show what it means to be a good digital citizen as well as
how we keep ourselves and others safe online! Each month there will be a different
topic we will be exploring; including topics like balancing our media usage, being
respectful online, and making sure that we are keeping our passwords and personal
information safe. There are some fun activities planned for digital citizenship this year!
