Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman

Hello Lakeside Families!

January is full of fantastic opportunities for activity! Students in grades 3-5 have been working on improving their stick handling skills during our hockey unit. This was also a great time to work on offensive and defensive strategies in small-sided games. Students in grades K-2 had the opportunity to learn how working together allows us to experience wonderful activities like the parachute. (Check out the smiles below!) 

The next few weeks will be filled with jump rope, tumbling and balance skills. Grades 3-5 will also begin learning about the 5 Components of Health-Related Physical Fitness: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. 

Students heard about my goal to spend 1,000 Hours Outside in 2022. If you would like to join along, print off your own tracker sheet here or have your child pick one up in the gym the next time they are in PE.

Headphone Reminder:

Many learning activities require sound. When in the classroom, headphones are helpful so as to not distract other learners. Please ask your child if they have headphones and if they are in working order. Many headphones or earbuds can be purchased at local stores or online. Chromebooks have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. 

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski

Happy 2022!!

January has been busy! We have had some great visitors at Lakeside already this year. As mentioned in the December newsletter, REACH Counseling visited Lakeside in the beginning of January. REACH Counseling works in conjunction with the Oshkosh Area School District to provide classroom lessons on protective behaviors. 

Fifth grade students were also visited by South Park staff. They learned how to register for a class and had an introduction on what it means to do things the “Panther Way”. There will also be additional opportunities later this school year to help 5th graders get ready for their transition to middle school. 

Kindergarten, First, and Second grade students are learning that mistakes can be learning opportunities, how to look for the good in situations, and how to be bucket fillers (for ourselves and others). Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be learning about the value of being trustworthy and honest. 

During our January class time, we will also complete the winter SAEBRS screener (the Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk screener). This will help identify social emotional learning needs at a school, class, and individual level.

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month we are continuing our discussion of Digital Citizenship by talking about our digital footprints and digital identities. The Kindergarten and First Grade students are starting this discussion by talking about how we should trust our gut to stay safe when we are online. Second grade students are beginning to talk about our online tracks and the fact that everything we do is a reflection of ourselves and will be there forever. Third graders this month talked about selfies and how we need to be honest online but also stay safe by not sharing too much online. Fourth and Fifth graders this month are talking about how our actions impact our digital footprints and others as well as how to make sure that both our current selves and future selves will be proud of our digital footprints.
