Dear Lakeside Families,

We are excited for real spring weather to arrive. We had a taste this week, and hope to again soon! Our outdoor weather guidelines are:

Below 50 degrees: students need a coat
Between 50-60 degrees: students need to wear long sleeves
61 degrees and above: student’s choice (shorts are allowed)

Last week, we practiced our spring tornado drill. Student did a great job following directions, sheltering safely in a "tucked" position for our drill. This is a great time to review where to go in your home for a tornado.

Did you know...

Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually? Last year Wisconsin had 40 confirmed tornadoes, but the state has had as many as 62 in one year!
Peak tornado season in Wisconsin is April to August but can occur any time. Kenosha had tornadoes as part of the January 7, 2008 storms.
Tornadoes are most frequent between 4 PM and 9 PM.
About 80% of tornadoes that hit Wisconsin are relatively weak, with winds under 110 mph. Only 1% are violent with winds over 170 mph.

Finally, all families are welcome to join us for our final Family Engagement Night on Thursday, April 28 from 5:00- 6:30 pm! All of our Lakeside students will be showcasing their learning for families! Bring your entire family! The Scholastic Book Fair will also be going on during Family Engagement Night. Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman

Hello Lakeside Families!

We are “rolling” through the month of April! Students in kindergarten through fifth grade have been practicing their roller skating skills during Physical Education these past two weeks. We have practiced everything from standing safely to maneuvering through obstacles. It’s wonderful to see their progress!

In the upcoming weeks, we will practice the following skills:

Aiming with a putter and learning the rules of mini golf
Improving our hand-eye coordination and striking skills using various racquets
Throwing Frisbees to a target
Learning a few different yard games

Music Update

Music Update from Ms. Olsen

Hello Lakeside families! Here’s what we’ve been doing since the last newsletter!

Kindergarten has learned a ‘Spring’ move and listen game called Bunnies. Depending on what they hear on the piano, they have to act out a different part of their bunny story! They’ve started to identify same versus different in music as well as create instrument people in groups they’ll get to play this week.

1st have also been playing Bunnies as well as writing ABA patterns in music, learning to listen and identify ‘many versus few’ instruments playing, as well as starting to learn drumming patterns on chairs.

2nd has been reviewing same, skip, and step on the staff, as well as learning the musical alphabet on glockenspiels. They’ve also been exploring playing solos versus in an ensemble on the glockenspiels.

3rd has been reviewing the line notes of the treble clef on teams and started memorizing the instruments of the orchestra. They will move on to xylophones and metallophones soon.

4th finished their review of the orchestral instruments and are now moving onto improvising on boomwhackers in small groups and one ensemble.

5th are finally onto their guitar unit they’ve waited patiently all year for! They’ve shown great respect for the instruments so far. These were kindly donated to us by South Park and Merrill Middle Schools.

Art Update

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

Kinders - Making Rainbows and practicing our drawing skills!

1st - Our clay bird is being loaded into the kiln for its final firing.

2nd - Backgrounds are complete and we have bugun the bee quilling.

3rd - Turtles are getting their color this week and go back into the kiln.

4th - We have just finished our tigers and are seeing them in the hallways, yay!

5th - It has been an exciting endeavor for 5th, Ms. Mateyka’s class has discovered some freedom within class and have run with it! We are seeing beautiful clay projects, dream weavers, paper mache, relief prints and lots of stuffies. Very proud of them!

As always, if you are interested in sending materials, our classes can always use thin cardboard like cereal or cracker boxes.

Art Update from Mrs. Molder:

Kindergarten artists are learning about warm and cool colors by creating emotion jellyfish. First grade artists are creating rainbow order paper collages and Romero Britto inspired hearts. Second grade artists are finishing their colorful house weavings. Fifth grade artists are working with metal tooling to create a music inspired artwork. It has been amazing to see all the incredible artwork created by students!

School Counselor Update

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski

Hooray for April!!

All students have been learning about careers in our class time together. Lakeside’s younger students have been learning about what a career is and about many different careers. Lakeside’s older students have been learning about their interests and strengths and how knowledge of those might relate to a career. They explored what they like and dislike using the Career Interest Inventory. Kindergarten and first grade will also be learning more about friendship skills and conflict resolution.

During our April class time, we will also complete the spring SAEBRS screener (the Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk screener). This will help identify social emotional learning needs at a school, class, and individual level. Teachers complete the screener for all grade levels and there is a student version for 2nd-5th grade.

KID TIP - Did you know that for children many emotions can present as anger? Your child may be feeling embarrassment, sadness, guilt, fear, frustration, worry, loneliness, etc. You can help your child by naming the emotion for your child (for example, “you are frustrated”). By digging deeper into what your child is really feeling when anger flares, you can give the comfort needed and teach lifelong coping skills

Media Specialist Update

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month we are continuing our discussion of Digital Citizenship by talking about Cyberbullying and Online Drama. In Kindergarten and Fifth Grade we read the book Troll Stinks by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross. In Kindergarten we explored the feelings of the characters and talked about how our words can have a big impact on others feelings. In fifth grade after reading the book we talked about cyberbullying and why it is important to stand against it when we see it and then made pennants with encouraging words for those who have experienced cyberbullying. In first grade we talked about what cyberbullying is and then talked about ways we can respond to it and ways we can be an upstander against it. In second grade we learned the acronym STOP (Step away, Tell a trusted adult, Ok sites first, and Pause and think online) and how we can use this to respond to cyberbullying. In third grade we talked about how our words have power and that we need to use those words wisely because we don’t know what the other person is going through on the other side of the screen. In fourth grade we made superheroes to stand up against cyberbullying. These superheroes had a variety of powers to stand up against cyberbullies and had a variety of costumes and sidekicks!

Forward Exam Continues!

Congratulations to all of our 5th graders for completing the Forward Exam! Forward testing continues next week for grades 4 and 3. Please see the schedule below. Remember that it's important for your student(s) to be to school on time so they will be ready for testing! Make-up tests will occur the week of April 25-29.

Student Council News

We are no longer taking plastic bags for the Trex program after Thursday, April 14th. As of April 8th, we had a total of 1,226 pounds of plastic bags and other items. Thank you to everyone who was able to help recycle. Thank you to the parents who helped get all the plastic to the drop off sites.

We are starting the coin wars on May 9th for the playground fund! We are excited to see how much money we can raise. Get your coins ready to help our playground!

Lakeside Family NightCome join us on Thursday, April 28th to celebrate all the wonderful learning your child has done this year.

This year’s family night will be an open house style. Come anytime between 5-6:15.

Our goal for the night is for your child to have a chance to show you around our school and to be able to say hello to their teachers. Your child will have 2-3 samples of learning to showcase. They are preparing these samples in the upcoming weeks and will be so excited to share these samples with you!

We also will have a bingo board that your family can complete. Your family will go on a scavenger hunt around the building visiting different areas. After you have completed your bingo board, you can sign your family’s name on the bingo board and drop it into the box. We will be drawing one family’s card for a chance to win a prize basket.

Scholastic Book Fair Library / Scholastic Book Fair

The PTO will be hosting a book fair from Aril 26th - April 29th. It will be open for shopping during Lakeside's Family Night on the 28th from 5-6:15, as well as additional hours during the week for student shoppers. Stay tuned for more information about student hours, eWallet, and more!
