COVID-19 Response Team @ Lakeside Elementary

Dear Lakeside Families,

It was so wonderful to see so many kids and families at our school dance last week! Students had a blast showing off their dances! Thank you, families, for participating in the basket raffles and silent auctions. This fundraiser raised over $3,700 for PTO to use to support our school community! A huge shout out to Andrea Schneider, Stephanie Homman, and ElizaBeth Chase, for organizing this event! Thanks to all other parents and staff that contributed with help setting up, preparing baskets, take-down, etc.!

When we return from spring break, our third through fifth grade students will be beginning to prepare for the Wisconsin Forward Exam. Testing dates and times are listed below. It is important that your child is at school and on-time so they can have a healthy snack and be ready for testing with their class.

I hope your family has a wonderful spring break! Fourth quarter will begin when we return!

Phy-Ed Update

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman

Hello Lakeside Families!

Students in K-5 had the opportunity to learn about the 5 Components of Health-Related Physical Fitness: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. K-2 students learned through station activities where our hearts were pumping, our muscles got stronger, and our bodies became more flexible. Students in grades 3-5 learned these components through circuit training.

Sometimes it’s fun to try games in the dark! We used the black lights and neon equipment during PE. It was so cool! Check out the picture below.

Roller skating starts on Monday, March 28th! Students are welcome to bring their own helmet and safety gear to school, but it’s not required as we have these items available. Lakeside will provide roller skates for every student, so you can leave your skates and blades at home.

Music Update

Music Update from Ms. Olsen

Hello Lakeside families! Here’s what we’ve been doing since the last newsletter!

Kindergarten has mastered high versus low sounds, as well as learning to play the triangle with a steady beat. They’ve also learned the song and game, Naughty Kitty Cat.

1st has just started learning about form in music, when to recognize music that sounds the same and music that sounds different. They’ve also been playing Naughty Kitty Cat and reading rhythms around the room in Candy Corners.

2nd has just started working on form as well using AB and ABA in favorite pop songs. They’ve also been reviewing how to play different classroom instruments.

3rd recently had their in-class talent show where they could showcase something musical like singing or dancing. They’ve also been working on playing the glockenspiels by ear.

4th/5th have also been playing the glockenspiels, learning how to improvise a melody using the beginning of Mary Had a Little Lamb. They’ve also been mastering singing short songs in a round.

Art Update

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

It’s warming up in here!

Kinders - Clay unit, time to experiment!

1st - Moving into clay with a spring bird.

2nd - The room is a buzz as we work with bees as our theme for our paper quilled project.

3rd - Pinch pots in our clay unit will begin to look a lot like a turtle soon!

4th - We are learning about analogous color with a complimentary focal point as we discover Rousseau and his “jungles”.

5th - It has been an exciting endeavor for 5th, Ms. Mateyka’s class has discovered some freedom within class and have run with it! We are seeing beautiful clay projects, dream weavers, paper mache, relief prints and lots of stuffies. Very proud of them!

As always, if you are interested in sending materials, our classes can always use thin cardboard like cereal or cracker boxes.

Mrs. Molder's Art Classroom:

All students have completed their clay unit! Kindergarten artists created texture turtles by stepping on their clay to reveal the texture on the bottom of their shoes. First grade artists reviewed rainbow order and created rainbow wall hangings. Second grade artists focused on additive and subtractive methods to create unique flowers with fun creatures. Fifth grade artists researched clay methods and processes and had the freedom to choose what they wanted to create. After spring break, all students will paint or glaze their clay artwork! It has been so much fun creating three-dimensional work with these artists!

Forward Exam Practice

Our 3-5 grade students will be taking the WI Forward exam soon. Teachers will be walking students through the online environment and reviewing sample questions. Good teaching is our best preparation for students, but having children comfortable with the format will help reduce any anxiety associated with a test. If you are interested in reviewing any test tools with students at home or checking out what the test looks like, you may visit https://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items and click on Online Test Tools (OTT). Students can practice highlighting, scrolling, cross out, post it, and any math tools. Remember, this is just to practice the tools; the sample tests may not be at your child’s level. School Counselor Update

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski

Wow, time is flying! Happy March!

Kindergarten, first, and second grade have been learning about what it means to be responsible, a big part of the Lakeside Way (Being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe). Kindergarten will also be learning about what to do when BIG feelings happen and how to calm your body so it is ready to do its very best learning. First grade is also learning about using mistakes as an opportunity to learn. Second grade is practicing cooperation skills and how to work together in groups. Third grade and fifth grade are learning about friendship, letting go of grudges, and forgiveness. They will also be learning what to do when they feel big emotions. They will be learning lots of strategies to help if they are feeling anxious or worried (Ask your 3rd or 5th grader to share their favorite one with you 😊) Fourth grade learned about perspective taking. They will also be learning about organization, an important skill for success at school.

KID TIP - Children communicate their needs through their behaviors. Look at your child’s behavior as a signal of unmet need. Often meeting that need will reduce unwanted behavior.

Media Specialist Update

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month we are continuing our discussion of Digital Citizenship by talking about Respect, Relationships, and Communication. The focus this month was on how we should be treating people when we are online and how to build a strong community with others online - while also staying safe! In Kindergarten we talked about what respect means and how we can show respect online. In first grade we talked about what makes a strong community in person and online. Both the kindergarten and first graders made elements for our online community garden bulletin board in the library. Kindergarten drew some respect flowers, flowers with examples of respect, and first grade drew community butterflies, butterflies with words for how to build a strong community. In second grade we talked about our circles of responsibility and how we should treat those in our community circle (those we know if person) and our world wide community (those we are connected to online) and what our responsibilities in both communities are. In third grade we talked about norms and how they help us to reach our goals. We talked about what some online norms were and how following those norms helps us to have fun and stay safe online. In fourth grade we talked about video games and how they have rules to help us have more fun. They then designed their own video game cover and had to come up with their own rules to make the game fun and safe for everyone. In fifth grade we talked about online friendships and how to keep them fun but also keep them safe. We read some open ended stories about online friendships and talked about how they would react if they were in the character’s shoes.

Returning Student Enrollment Begins April 1st!

Summer School Enrollment Now Open

Online registration is now open for the 2022 Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) Summer School program, which offers a variety of classes for students in kindergarten through high school. OASD eAcademy 2022-23 Enrollment Period

The Oshkosh Area School District is pleased to announce the 2022-23 enrollment period for the District’s eAcademy, a fully online school for grades K-12. The enrollment period will take place from March 8 through March 28, 2022, at 3 p.m., which will allow students to enroll in eAcademy for the full 2022-23 school year.
