COVID-19 Response Team @ Lakeside Elementary

Dear Lakeside Families,

We are so thrilled to see the COVID case numbers coming down throughout our district and school. We are hoping that trend continues as we move into a mask-optional environment the week of February 28th. Please remind your child(ren) that we will be required to wear masks through next week!

Our school will be celebrating an annual mid-year event called Lakeside Way Celebration the week of February 22-25. This event is to recognize students for all the great work they do to contribute to our school climate. We have three pillars that help us learn about how to show the Lakeside Way: respectful, responsible, and safe. We verbally notice and acknowledge students for showing expected behaviors at school. Twice during the year, we celebrate that our students are making school a wonderful place to be learning and growing! Next week's celebrations will begin on Tuesday with Wild Winter Hair Day! Here's the link to the events for the week!

Our parking lot is narrow and very busy during the drop-off/pickup times. Please drive slowly and be very cautious when backing out of your stall. We've had some near misses and want to make sure that everyone stays safe!

Student Council News

Lakeside Elementary and student council worked together to decorate placemats for our elders. Placemats and candy were delivered to 3 different nursing homes throughout the Oshkosh community. We are still collecting plastic for the Trex Program until 4/22/22. As of 2/11/22, we have collected 639 pounds of plastic. Student council is working on planning other events so please keep an eye out for information that will be sent home with your child.

Yearbook Orders Due February 28th

Click HERE to order your 2021-2022 yearbook! You can order yearbooks through February 28th. They will be delivered to the school and distributed later in the year to all who ordered.

Phy-Ed Update

Physical Education Update from Mrs. Homman

Hello Lakeside Families!

Students in grades K-5 had the opportunity to practice gymnastic and tumbling skills over the past few weeks. Balance beams, climbing ropes, rolling stations, partner stunts, and an obstacle course were some of the favorites from the unit.

We are diving into our nutrition unit now. Students are learning about MyPlate and the 5 food groups, the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, and how food gives us energy. There are so many great conversations happening during these lessons. Students are curious about where their food comes from and why it is important to fuel our bodies with healthy foods. A few big take-aways from the lessons were: 1.) make half your plate fruits and vegetables 2.) eat a rainbow (not Skittles!).

The 4th and 5th grade students took advantage of a warm winter day to try snowshoeing on the playground. Check out the pictures below!

All students will be roller skating during PE in a few weeks. Students are welcome to bring their own helmet and safety gear to school, but it’s not required as we have these items available. Lakeside will provide roller skates for every student. Watch for more details coming soon!

Music Update

Music Update from Ms. Olsen

Hello Lakeside families! Here’s what we’ve been doing since the last newsletter!

Kindergarten has started writing rhythms on whiteboards using “long, short-short, shh” symbols. They’ve also started learning about high versus low voices.

1st has been getting better at reading and writing rhythms using ta, ti-ti, and rest. They’ve also started learning about the lines and spaces on the musical staff.

2nd has been working on reading and writing rhythms using ta, ti-ti, rest, half note, and half rest. They’ve also mastered a Valentine’s Day circle dance.

3rd has been working on playing the pentatonic scale on glockenspiels. They’ve also started writing their own songs for the glockenspiels using rhythms they’ve learned so far (ta, ti-ti, rest, half note, half rest, whole note, whole rest).

4th/5th recently had their first talent show in music class featuring students playing instruments, singing, and dancing. They’ve also been working on knowing the notes of the treble clef.

Art Update

Art Update from Mrs. Wollangk:

Rounding out Winter!

Kinders - Loving our Valentine’s project, kinders have moved into weaving with painted paper.

1st - We are experimenting with oil pastel to create a textured lion.

2nd - Just finished their abstract printmaking and are moving to weaving in the round with an analogous color scheme.

3rd - Are just about to put the finishing touches on their animal portraits.

4th - Is playing with positive and negative space, with the Japanese Notan heart.

5th - It has been an exciting endeavor for 5th, Ms. Mateyka’s class has discovered some freedom within class and have run with it! We are seeing beautiful clay projects, dream weavers, paper mache, relief prints and lots of stuffies. Very proud of them!

As always, if you are interested in sending materials, our classes can always use thin cardboard like cereal or cracker boxes.

Mrs. Molder's Art Classroom:

Kindergarten artists finished their happy penguins and are now creating their own planet collages. First grade artists learned about Romero Britto and his colorful work and are creating hearts inspired by him. Second grade artists learned how to make a loom and started weaving houses. Fifth grade artists created keychains of their choice. All grade levels will start creating their clay projects at the end of the month!

Technology Update

Digital Learning Day

On February 22, the nation will celebrate the annual Digital Learning Day. This event dates back to 2012. Digital learning combines effective instruction with technology to enhance the student learning experience. As our teachers work with students, they incorporate the use of technology to engage our students.

Teachers are continually exploring ways to incorporate technology. Students are accessing Canvas on a regular basis. Consider setting up your Parent Canvas Account if you haven’t already. Classroom teachers can generate a join code if you need one. Thank you!

School Counselor Update

School Counselor Update from Mrs. Lubinski

Happy February!

Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students have been learning about how to look for the positives in situations and in themselves. They are learning about the power of positive thinking. Lakeside students are awesome and can do such amazing things! Third grade has also been learning about responsibility and how to be responsible at school and home. Fourth and fifth graders have been learning about having a growth mindset. Did you know that students who have a growth mindset do better in school? Fourth graders will also be learning about gratitude and joy. Fifth graders will also be learning about and creating goals.

KID TIP - Did you know that the recommended hours of sleep per day for elementary students is 9-12 hours? A well rested brain is better at:

Concentrating
Problem solving
Making positive decisions
Learning and remembering new information
Having more energy for the day
Creating and maintaining good relations with others
Regulating BIG emotions

Media Specialist Update

Media Update from Ms. Collins

This month we are continuing our discussion of Digital Citizenship by talking about Privacy & Security. This month our focus is on what is safe and what is unsafe to share online. In Kindergarten we played Safe or Unsafe with popsicle sticks to talk about information we should keep private. In First Grade we figured out if it was safe to sign up for SongTube (a fake website) based on what information it was asking for. In Second Grade we did a maze to find our path with things that are safe to share. In Third Grade we talked about the consequences of being unsafe online with some If/Then statements. In Fourth Grade we looked at some examples of safe and unsafe online behavior and discussed how to stay safe with our online actions. In Fifth Grade we played a Kahoot about staying safe online and then discussed why it is important to keep some things private.
